FULL TITLE: Jahi McMath, the teen declared brain dead by doctors in 2013, has died undergoing surgery in New Jersey after a five-year bitter legal fight by her mother who insisted medics were wrong and she was still alive
A girl at the center of the medical and religious debate over brain death has died after surgery in New Jersey, her mother said Thursday.
Nailah Winkfield said doctors declared her daughter Jahi McMath dead on June 22 from excessive bleeding and liver failure after an operation to treat an intestinal issue.
McMath was declared dead in December 2013 when she was 13 after suffering irreversible brain damage during routine surgery in California to remove her tonsils and a coroner signed a death certificate. Several specialists concurred after neurological tests.
Winkfield refused to accept the conclusion. She said her Christian beliefs compelled her to fight for continued care for her daughter, who she said showed signs of life through toe wriggles and finger movements.

Many of us would not be here except for having “unreasonable” mom’s like Jahi’s. There’s no doubt that I would not.
Reasonableness is a lot to ask of a parent faced with losing a child.

No. In this case she would have died naturally.
There was no reason to keep this child alive for all of these years. She should have been allowed to pass on her own—as she would have.

I remember following this for awhile. I couldn’t get over the fact a young girl went brain dead from a tonsillectomy. Her mom never gave up. I remember hoping for a miracle but since that could not be thankfully she is at total rest now.
Died Twice. That’s quite a feat.
She was never in a coma, but was brain dead. That means she was really dead. Her mother tried to keep the body going (was she hoping a new brain would appear and Jahi would live again?).
Once death has occurred, it is usually impossible to keep the body in a functional state. I’m guessing that Jahi’s body remained in a life-like state because she was so young. I think the maximum time a body had been preserved in this manner was a few months, and this was done experimentally.
Jahi actually died several years ago.
Point remains, there are plenty of people in coma who are on ventilation.
They can’t breathe on their own either.
So what is their real point then?
Euthanasia by default.
I notice that the pro-euthanasia people are rather alive.
One would think they would lead by example.
A person in a coma has a living, functional brain and is therefore fully alive. Often, comatose people are aware of what is going on around them. I’m all for keeping comatose people alive and giving them the time they need for their brains to heal. (If you ever have a comatose relative, remember that—talk to them and provide something worthwhile to listen to.)
Jahi was not comatose. She was dead. Her brain was mummified. There is no particular benefit to maintaining the body of a dead person in a lifelike state. In fact, there is quite a bit of harm. For example, how did Jahi’s siblings fare when their mother was obsessing over their sister’s corpse for several years?
She died 4.5 years ago. It is a disgrace what they did to the poor girl. R.I.P.
Most uninformed post I’ve seen. True brain death or cessation of brain function would not allow a heart to beat for five years.
You should refrain from opining on that which you do not understand.
Regardless of one’s personal stance on the issue, who were the doctors and surgeons who agreed to operate? Why now? Why not any time in the previous 5 years? What medical issues did they hope to address and what outcome were they seeking?
Now...let's go back....wasn't excessive bleeding what she died of in the first place.
Get a clue docs...something was wrong with her system...
