DESIGN: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study was done.
SETTING: General otorhinolaryngologic consultation for 2002-2004 in Seville, Spain.
METHODS: One hundred twenty patients consulted for subjective tinnitus. They were included randomly in four groups of 30.
RESULTS: Based on the subjective grading, tinnitus perception diminished by 56% in patients treated with sulpiride, by 40% in patients treated with melatonin, by 81% in patients treated with sulpiride plus melatonin, and by 22% in patients treated with placebo. Based on the visual analogue scale, tinnitus perception diminished from 7.7 to 6.3 in patients treated with sulpiride, to 6.5 in those treated with melatonin, to 4.8 in patients treated with sulpiride plus melatonin, and to 7.0 in those treated with placebo.
CONCLUSIONS: Sulpiride and melatonin reduce tinnitus perception, decreasing dopamine activity. The tinnitus auditolimbic dopaminergic pathway has broad therapeutic implications.

There was a vanity thread a week or two ago in which many complained about tinnitus. This approach appears to quickly get rid of it in up to 81% of patients. Do note that 3 mg of melatonin is cheap and available and any store; including Walmart and worked in resolving 40% of all cases. Talk with your doctor to see if these options work for you.
The original title is, Sulpiride and melatonin decrease tinnitus perception modulating the auditolimbic dopaminergic pathway.
Interesting.
Can you post this louder, I can’t hear you ?!
I have tinnitus but it rarely bothers me. I guess my body has got used to it and puts it on the back burner.
As someone with tinnitus and also sleeping difficulty Im going try the melatonin
I suffered for 3 years with both Ménières disease and tinnitus. Absolutely hell on earth, my cure was daily B complex vitamins, low salt and 9 hours sleep nightly. I hope this works for you.
Interesting. I think RB has the tinnitus ping list.
It doesn’t “get rid of” tinnitus. It reduces your perception of it. Big difference.
9 hours sleep? Maybe if I intensely worked out for two hours per day. Or if I could be 13 years old once again.

Thats where the melatonin could helpit can keep you asleep longer. There is even a 10 mg time release version that will do a number on you.
bttt
Ping to Diana; we had a conversation about Melatonin a long time ago; you’ll find this article interesting . . .
I’ve been using melatonin for about a year. My doc suggested it. Doesn’t seem to do much for me. I read a study recently that says it helps you get to sleep a few minutes faster and stay asleep a few minutes longer, but no huge improvement. That’s consistent with my experience.
How many mgs do you take, and is it time release?
I was in the same boat -- tinnitus and borderline insomnia. To help with both, I have been taking melatonin for many years, 3 mg. Spring Valley brand, about 90 minutes before I go to bed. It definitely helps me sleep, and my tinnitus is no longer a significant problem unless I take ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or a few other things.
Another trick to improving sleep is to leave a fan on low in the room where you sleep. A little white noise can really help.
Good luck.
First, it looks like both chemicals have to be taken together for the tinnitus to be significantly reduced.
Second, the study did not demonstrate a cure for the tinnitus. The chemicals reduced awareness of tinnitus, but not the condition itself.
Third, the age of this study and the fact that tinnitus continues to be considered untreatable makes me suspect that the results were not repeated in subsequent studies.
Most treatments for tinnitus consist of strategies to distract attention from the ceaseless noise.
I have tinnitus because I have a condition that may cause me to go deaf.

That is just one. I chose what I did because it was in a quick reference format and clearly stated it was double-blind.
Fair point on the diminish versus cure. I had to go back to catch that. Thank you.
12 mg. Not timed release.
Yep. The stuff gives me the most vivid nightmares you can imagine! I switched to vodka and sleeping pills, LOL!
