I’m sure she had no idea she was near the border.
Riiiiiiight...
Did the same thing to an Aussie teenager who was leaving the US and overstayed by one day - was incarcerated for three weeks, her parents weren’t informed and went crazy for those three weeks. Guess they weren’t Latino/Somali/African enough to be just let loose.
Like walking backwards into the movie theater to make it look like you’re leaving ? LOL
Same sort of people who're hired as TSA agents.
bullsh*t. either this didn’t happen, or there’s something crucial missing from the story — it certainly didn’t happen that way
Sorry idiot, but you were carrying no identification. Guilty.
She was French, not Canadian. She was caught in the US. She wanted to go back to Canada. Too many countries involved. Not sure any of the governments really cared on this one.
DK
Pretty cavalier about ID too, for a person on the wrong continent.
More fake news? Doesn’t pass the smell test. As if her mama didn’t tell her that rock over there is the border so stay to this side. As if Canada or France couldn’t have made a phone call especially if mama brought her passport.
Probably one of those self-imagined “citizens of the world”. Doesn’t work in real life.
Being from Vancouver BC, I know some people in White Rock. Probably more cameras there than a TMZ stakeout in Hollywood.
Even back in the late 90’s before 9/11, we accidentally crossed in to the US and the border guys just gave us a LONG sermon not to do it again. And this was before 9/11..
Another illegal alien ripped from her mama’s arms and put in a cage!
The U.S/Canadian border, despite the happy stories of towns where people use the same library, theater, and such, is CLEARLY marked with lots of signs, and the border guys make it clear that they arent playing around.
Maybe our border people could have been a bit more efficient, but this person should have been paying better attention.
see my post 11. Grew up in Vancouver and know a lot of people in White Rock. Like I said before 9/11, the US Border guys will rip into you and I KNOW they closed all the forest trails (I knew some back in HS to cross into the US) from White Rock, Peach Arch etc.
and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you can “jog” into the US from that section without knowing it. There are more cameras there than a Hollywood production studio.
Remember the case of that Marine who got into the wrong lane near the border and accidentally found himself in Mexico. It took months before he was released...while the Obama administration did nothing on his behalf.
Its well marked, but not walled off at the waterline. Look at the size of the sign there, within 100 feet of the water:
Additionally, the area is dominated by the imposing Peace Arch, which marks the border, and clearly flies each nation's flag on their side, only about 100 yards from the water, and up on the high ground.
DETROIT - A wrong turn into Canada turns into a nightmare for a Shelby Township, Michigan couple. Bennie and Lalani Choice were heading home from a night out at the Auto Show and dinner in Mexicantown. They're not from Detroit and they got confused when the ramp they were supposed to take for Interstate 75 was closed. We didnt know the area, so Im like, 'Im just going to stay down on the service drive and it should be another entrance ramp,' said Bennie Choice.
Instead they ended up on a "no re-entry" ramp on the way into Canada. They asked a woman at a toll booth how to get back around. "She did tell me that Customs would just let me turn around, I wouldn't even have to enter into Canada, Choice said. Choice said the woman didnt even charge them for the toll. After they made it across the bridge, a U.S. Customs agent asked if they had any illegal guns or weapons.
Bennie said he didnt. He said he is a veteran and a licensed gun holder. "In my mind, I'm not illegal, Choice said. He expected to just turn around at that point. "The exit for the United States was right there, all she had to do was say, 'OK go left,' said Choice.
Instead, he was flagged over to be searched. When he got out of the car, he told the agent about his gun. "He looked at me and said do you have a gun? and I said, Yeah I do. I gave him my license and everything, and then he said, 'You're under arrest,' said Choice.
He and his wife were put in handcuffs and taken to a room. The agents also found pepper spray on his wifes key chain. "They were like, 'Do you all realize what you were doing, smuggling guns and pepper spray into Canada?' We weren't even trying to come to Canada, we were trying to turn around, Lalani Choice said. Lalani said she was treated like an animal. She said she was terrified and crying. She had to call off for her late shift at work, since they were detained for nearly five hours.
"You shouldn't feel like a criminal because you made a wrong turn or you didn't understand the question right, and to be treated ... we were threatened with prison time, Lalani Choice said. The couple was forced to surrender their vehicle. Customs agents checked their backgrounds and sent them back across the border in a cab. In order to get their vehicle back, they had to come back to Canada and pay nearly $2,500. They were not allowed to have the gun back. The money was supposed to go towards Lalanis nursing school tuition. We were saving that money for that, we dont have that extra money. said Bennie.
Mygosh, even the average idiot on a cruise knows NEVER be in a foreign country without proper ID.
She crossed the border at an unapproved and unmanned border area.
She crossed the border with out a pass port.
She is not a citizen of either the country she exited or the country she entered.
Her mother brought her her pass port but the border guards can not take that document at face value because it was not in her possession initially.
What the border patrol would have to do is kick the issue up to the state department to have the pass port verified by the country of which she claims citizenship, France.
They also have to assume she intended to cross the border illegally. They will have to search the terrorist watch list data base to see if she is suspected of terrorist ties.
To me it is not surprising that it took two weeks.
If she didnt want to carry her pass port jogging she should have carried a photo copy of it folded in her pocket.
Whenever the wife and I travel we always have a couple of copies of our pass ports in our luggage.
Losing your pass port or having it stolen in a foreign country is very serious and will inconvenience you severely. Having a copy of it will smooth thing out considerably.
Yes.
There are times when common sense should be applied
If she had no id and was jogging she probably did not have anything else to suggest a long term stay
Ive had issues crossing borders before with small people looking for a power trip or a bribe to expedite things
