Florida man wrangles alligator from 10-foot python's deadly grip in Everglades

An Everglades alligator owes its life to a Florida trapper after it was rescued from the suffocating clutches of a 10-foot python.

Mike Kimmel, owner of Martin County Trapping and Removals and Martin County Wildlife Rescue, came across the massive python in the dark night of the Everglades already wrapped around a 4-foot alligator this weekend.

In a video posted to his Facebook page, Kimmel was seen wrangling the python from the bushes and held it up until it dropped the smaller alligator, which quickly scampered away.

The freed alligator has some company; Kimmel told Fox News it was the third he’s saved from a python in the past year.

Kimmel has been contracted by the South Florida Water Management District for about a year, tasked with hunting and removing pythons. Over the past year, he said more than 1,070 pythons have been removed by trappers, and he captures anywhere from two to six per night.

“Born and raised in Florida, I love the Everglades, I love the outdoors and I love everything we have down here,” he said. “When I see what the pythons have done to the Everglades, it’s something I can’t stand by and watch.”

What a job. He is “Contracted” to catch snakes. Is there a bonus for saving alligators?

Wouldn’t it be easier and safer to shoot the python in the head and then unwrap the python? Gotta watch out for both critters.

“Swamp People” had a show where Troy went to a place where these pythons were dominate. He came on a fight between the python and a gator. In this one the gator came out on top by biting through its head.

What do they do with those caught?

I see he gets a bounty. Wondering where the hides and the meat go?

Why are they catching the pythons? Why aren't they killing them? Are they relocating the pythons to some do-gooder "python sanctuary"? Why not kill them on the spot and let the gators clean up.

That’s just a little bitty Gator. He should’ve shot the python.

They’re an invasive species which does not belong in Florida - kinda like New Yorkers.

Why?
I understand the instinct to protect the underdog and all that but they're both vermin and Pythons have as much right to eat.

This is awesome, but it's still nothing compared to Australia - Mother Nature's killing field.

Why not just kill all those invasive pythons and other introduced pests? Seriously. PUt a bounty on those things and turn them into boots/shoes/etc.

Pythons (and boas) were introduced by idiots who bought them as pets then either moved where they couldn’t have them or simply became overwhelmed with the care/responsibility - so they just turned them loose to wreak havoc on the ecosystem. Native species are being severely impacted.
