VATICAN CITYIn an honest, impromptu homily delivered Monday, Pope Francis admitted he is just making most of his theology up as he goes, ignoring thousands of years of official Church doctrine in favor of whatever pops into my head at the time.
Where past Popes have been careful in their attempts to stay in line with official Catholic teaching, Pope Francis confessed he doesnt really know much official doctrine, stating that hes more of a shoot from the hip kind of guy when it comes to weighty topics of morality, salvation, God, and eternity.
People ask me questions, and Im not always sure what to say, so honestly Im just winging it, the Pope said in his candid, unscheduled address. This job is really hard, when you think about it. Trying to be the Vicar of Christ and deal with everybodys complicated theological questions all at the same time? Ugh. It gives me a headache. So I just start talking. Even Im surprised with what comes out sometimes.
I just want everyone to know about, like, love and God and stuff, he added thoughtfully before beginning to take questions from those gathered in the Sistine Chapel, with the Pope signing off on Christian fornication, adultery, and polygamy during the short impromptu Q&A session.
At publishing time, frantic Catholic leadership had located the Pope and tackled him to the ground to prevent him from saying anything further.
The Pope thinks he’s John Wayne.
Lightning strike in THREE ... TWO ... ONE ....
The Church made up the Nicene Creed in 325. Do you want to kick that to the curb?
I believe it mostly.
The meeting was convened to deal with particular heresies and did not cover much of the things Rome made up before the meeting.)
(The mostly relates to this phrase, We believe also in only One, Universal, Apostolic, and [Holy] Church;
I dont believe in the Roman Church, but do believe in one invisible church, comprised of every soul who has entrusted himself to Christ alone, via faith. This is in concordance with Scriptural teaching.
And by Apostolic, I believe the Apostles are the foundation of the church.
The Promulgation of canon law at Nicea I do not believe.
And it is worth noting the bishop of Rome was not recognized as a pope over Christendom.
Best.
About the church declaration at Nicea that made clear there is no papal role or authority over churches...
CANON #6
While the creed of the council was its central achievement, it was not the only thing that the bishops accomplished during their meeting. Twenty canons were presented dealing with various disciplinary issues within the church.
Of most interest to us today was the sixth, which read as follows:
Let the ancient customs in Egypt, Libya, and Pentapolis prevail, that the Bishop of Alexandria have jurisdiction in all these, since the like is customary for the Bishop of Rome also. Likewise in Antioch and the other provinces, let the Churches retain their privileges.20
This canon is significant because it demonstrates that at this time there was no concept of a single universal head of the church with jurisdiction over everyone else.
While later Roman bishops would claim such authority, resulting in the development of the papacy, at this time no Christian looked to one individual, or church, as the final authority.
This is important because often we hear it alleged that the Trinity, or the Nicene definition of the deity of Christ, is a Roman Catholic concept forced on the church by the pope. The simple fact of the matter is, when the bishops gathered at Nicea they did not acknowledge the bishop of Rome as anything more than the leader of the most influential church in the West.21

Thank you for this response.
You’re not the first person I’ve asked about the Nicene Creed, and sometimes the responses have been so vituperative that I have to wonder whether the person has become so dominated with suspicion and malice that it has pushed out love altogether.
Your remarks are more positive and more discriminating (in the good sense) and that’s always welcome.
Oh sorry Laz, you are the exception. No imagination, no innovation to creation no fun. Just cold steel and stealing everyone else’s ideas. This goes without stating that the previous post needed a /s tag as well as this one.

What do you do when you don’t know what to do and no one else has ever done it before? Since you know, you don’t make things up as you go?
You must know me in person!

Well, at least you admit you are a coward and a thief. The only thing left is the execution.
Well, let try for the first and that fails we have the second to fall upon.

“Is the pope Catholic?” haha
“Nope”
