‘B’ Is for Burger: IHOP Officially Flips Name to IHOb—at Least for Now
Ad Week ^ | June 11, 2018 | Doug Zanger

Posted on 06/11/2018 7:11:27 AM PDT by EdnaMode

As brand stunts go, IHOP has squeezed a decent amount of juice out of a teaser early last week indicating that the restaurant would change its name to IHOb.

IHOb ✔ @IHOb For 60 pancakin’ years, we’ve been IHOP. Now, we’re flippin’ our name to IHOb. Find out what it could b on 6.11.18. #IHOb

Social media was aflutter with speculation, especially with the brand’s attempt to throw people off the scent with a poll on June 5 that stretched the limits of plausibility (butternut squash?).

IHOb ✔ @IHOb IHOb? What could it b? #IHOb 4:10 PM - Jun 5, 2018 26%Biscuits 41%Bacon 6%Butternut Squash 27%Barnacles 38,805 votes • Final results

There appeared to be a decent amount of stickiness and good-natured hijinx as Stephen Colbert picked up on the switch and, in what has become de rigeur, other brands decided to swoop in on the fun. There was even one possible intergenerational flap and several other chuckle-inducing moments (see, Twitter isn’t that angry!).

Just what is this magical “b” you speak of, IHOP—excuse me—IHOb? The smart social media money was on “breakfast” or “brunch.” After much ado about apparently something, today, the brand revealed that the name change—and the “b”—stands for burgers.

The brand stunt includes changing store signage and the Twitter handle to IHOb, plus promoting the 60-year old breakfast chain’s new “Ultimate Steakburgers” offering, complete with seven varieties. Additionally, a Hollywood flagship IHOb restaurant will host a “VIB” launch party today.

Are they serious that they would change all their signage of a 60 yar old brand?

If so this will not go well for them.

Just a stupid idea by someone.

IHOP is not the problem.

The problem is Waffle House.

Its Aweful House

I recall asking a Pannekoeken Restaurant manager about what other “Dutch” food they might have. This drew a blank stare.

I suggested driving down to Pella, Iowa and visiting one or two of the restaurants in this Dutch city...

More blank stares...

Mmmmm chili burgers...

Ever had a chili size? Basically a chili burger, but served in a bowl. A SoCal treat.

I think that the mgmt is trying to get ahead of the wave of low-carb dieting by people. They would rather be identified as a burger (protein) joint than a carbohydrate-rich restaurant.

Marketing 101 - You screw with an established, well-known brand at your own peril.

Years ago, wife and I stopped at Waffle House near St. Louis for breakfast.
The watress took our order and walked to the kitchen and shouted out, :Flip it, dip it, nip it, and clip it.”

This is stupid on so many counts.

Don’t squander brand recognition. Rebranding that throws that out ruins it.

You’re known for pancakes. Most of what you do should be
related to pancakes. If people want pancakes, they go to you. If they want burgers, they go to a burger place - it is better.

Don’t ruin your search engine optimization’ Don’t confuse Google maps with “show me the closest IHOP” and it says there isn’t one ... and even if they return to the regular “pancakes”, the databases will be screw up for years. Now travelers will have more leads to Waffle House when they want pancakes or similar breakfast foods at any time.

I take you’ve seen the Jim Gaffigan act about Awful house. “It’s 2am, you’ve been drinking, what’s one more bad decision.” “It’s like someone opened a restaurant in a gas station bathroom.”

Good moveby IHOP. They were as ad as Dennys and aplace only the impoverished should go. Dennys and IHOP seve inedible food a homeless erson would reject. IHOP. Coffee was among theworst in the business.

We will see how their burgers are. They have a chance to serve good burgers, but if they areas ad as eirbold food, then I would rather eat MacDonalds and I would NEVER eat MacDonalds. In andOut crushes MacDonalds at that price point.

I know... but the marketing geniuses who thought of IHOb are going to pee their pants at the number of people who think the same thing (”What- no more pancakes??”)
