Duo uses own price tags to buy Walmart goods at lower price: NOPD

Supermarket giant Walmart has long lauded itself on its low prices and discounts, as evidenced by the tagline "Save Money. Live Better." A duo in New Orleans allegedly took that slogan too literally when they brought cut-out price tags into a Walmart store in order to buy goods at a lower price, police said.

On May 25, Jeffrey Johnson, 49, and Leilani Walther, 50, were observed on surveillance video using false Universal Product Code labels to purchase goods at a lesser price at a Walmart at 4001 Behrman Place in Algiers. The duo is suspected of cutting UPC labels from other merchandise and carrying them into the store. They then purchase goods at a self-chosen discount via the self-check lanes, according to NOPD.

LOL you will see them all the time when the fast foods convert to kiosks. They will stare at a hamburger and wonder if it is the same as before.

Longer wait times, more thefts and fewer jobs. I consult for many retail stores and they are mostly considering cutting back.

With a cashier you wait for someone that does it all day for a living. With selfcheckout you wait in line for multiple people that mostly cant use the machines. Then the constant errors and headaches come.

To keep the line moving during busy times, the attendants always override the antitheft devices. If you arent dressed like a bum, you can walk out with hundreds of dollars in merch easily. It’s a joke

The my store must be stupid and not follow good business practices. Unusual for WalMart

My experience is nothing like what you describe. The more these proliferate the more people will be sued to it.

Walmart has been installing systems where the receipt will be tied to video of your check out.

The self checkout at the local grocery store has a small video screen so you can make sure your hair is smoothed down for the checkout video. I always give them a full face smile before I leave.

Of course, I know that's just to distract me from the cameras focused on the cart, the scanner, and the bagging area. I do appreciate that they've added the scanner guns so I don't have to lift the heavy items out of the buggy and try to position them on the scanner.

Yep. The goal 10 years ago was to come up with a 10 cent RFID tag, that was the price point where Walmart said they would go to 100% RFID and be able to pay for it by eliminating other cost and labor. That cost point may have shifted by now, and it’s a bit of a dilemma as to get to the lowest cost, RFID manufacturers need to have the super-high volume that a Walmart could provide.

Just like the self-ordering terminals at McDonalds, it will come, it’s just a matter of time.

RFID tags will all but eliminate that.

When I read about Amazon buying whole food I thought I read there would not be any check out. You use a card to enter the store and your purchases are charged before leaving the store. Not sure how this will work but I am sure the technology is available.

I hate self-checkout. I pay enough for my purchases without doing their job for them. Way back when, I went to a grocery store where they offered self-checkout. In return for scanning and bagging your own groceries, you received a 5(or10-I cannot remember)% discount.
As far as comparisons to fast food kiosks, I do not see it. That is an order, not having me cook my own food. With self-checkout, I am expected to scan, figure out produce, bakery etc., bag my own groceries on a tiny little platform and then make payment, load my cart and pray I did not miss anything.

Oh, and our Walmart has the regular checkouts further from the doors. I guess it makes the self-checkouts more “convenient”. Well, there are a lot of elderly people who shop and it is not “easier” for them so they end up having to walk twice as far. Ours has 9 regular checkouts. The other day, they had 8 and 9 open. But, they had 5 people wandering around the self-checkouts while 2 lines were into the aisles. I called and asked them to please open another lane. Ridiculous.

Back in 1985 in North Dakota a man was stealing VCRs at the local Target. He would place a 50 pound bag of dog food on the bottom of the cart, put a VCR on the bag, then place another bag of dog food on top of the VCR.

After stealing three or four VCRs store security caught on and finally caught him trying to steal a fourth VCR.

Pretty slick, but not slick enough. If you want an example of creativity + sheer nerve aided by stupidity there was an incident on the West Bank of N.O. at a pawn shop. Black couple goes in empty handed, man stops at front counter woman goes to electronics. She picks up a TV, takes the stickers off and goes up front and PAWNS it for $$!! I ALMOST wish they had gotten away with it because the shop proprietors were Sooooo STUPID. They were apprehended.

I like the selfcheckout, too. As for theft, these have an upside as well. I suspect the embarrassing items are the most shop-lifted (condoms, suppositories, yeast infection treatments, etc.).

The stuff we buy can be very personal. It's normal to not want a cashier eyeballing your stuff.

I don’t see going to the store as a social event. So the machine check-out saves time as lonely people chat up the checker and the bagger.
