I hate self-checkout. I pay enough for my purchases without doing their job for them. Way back when, I went to a grocery store where they offered self-checkout. In return for scanning and bagging your own groceries, you received a 5(or10-I cannot remember)% discount.
As far as comparisons to fast food kiosks, I do not see it. That is an order, not having me cook my own food. With self-checkout, I am expected to scan, figure out produce, bakery etc., bag my own groceries on a tiny little platform and then make payment, load my cart and pray I did not miss anything.
Oh, and our Walmart has the regular checkouts further from the doors. I guess it makes the self-checkouts more “convenient”. Well, there are a lot of elderly people who shop and it is not “easier” for them so they end up having to walk twice as far. Ours has 9 regular checkouts. The other day, they had 8 and 9 open. But, they had 5 people wandering around the self-checkouts while 2 lines were into the aisles. I called and asked them to please open another lane. Ridiculous.
