Talk show host and comedian Steve Harvey referred to the Golden State Warriors as gorillas, on ESPNs NBA Finals pre-game show.
During an interview with ESPNs Stephen A. Smith, Harvey was asked if there was anything his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers could do to derail Golden State? Harvey responded by saying that there wasnt, because they had 800-pound gorillas on their team:
The caption of the video asks Outkick the Coverages Clay Travis whether Harveys comments constitute a Doug Adler situation. Adler, who is white, was part of ESPNs coverage of the Australian Open in 2017. During coverage of the match between Venus Williams who is black and Stefanie Voegele, Adler used the term guerilla effect to describe Williams tactics on the court.
Upon hearing Adler say that, many viewers thought Adler had referred to Williams tactics as the gorilla effect, causing some to believe that Adler had used a racial slur. ESPN subsequently fired Adler despite his obvious reference to tactic, not an animal.
The difference in Harveys use of the term is that unlike Adler by referencing all the gorillas on Golden States team, Harvey actually did apply an animal reference to black athletes.

I have mostly heard this reference as “the elephant in the room”.
Gorillas kinda sorta have other insinuations, especially when describing certain people. It’s PC in overdrive, but I see both sides.
True, just like "tar baby" is a reference to an inextricable problem. My entire life, I never once heard that obscure term applied in any other way - yet it is now banished by the P.C. forces within our culture. They don't need any logic to "see" a tinge of racism in anything - they just make it up as they go.
Gotta love Steve Harvey!!!! Mmmmm, wonder how the PC crowd is gonna respond to this!!!!
I can take him or leave him. He show is better than watching Shepard Smith on Fox but that isn't saying much.
Harvey took a lot of heat for going to talk with President Trump. He’s liberal, but not nearly as batsh#tty as most are in Hollywood.
Not likely to be fired as it isn’t racist

“800-pound gorilla” is an American English expression for a person or organization
so powerful that it can act without regard to the rights of others or the law.[1]
The phrase is rooted in a joke riddle:
“Where does an 800-lb. gorilla sit?”
[The answer: “Anywhere it wants to.”]
I’m sorry, his statement is in no way racist. He’s right. GS’s top five could be marquee players on any other team. Too much firepower. Remarkable for a town like Oakland, which I love.
I’ll also say that Jerry Brown was an outstanding mayor for that city, and had he remained so, Oakland would be a truly remarkable place. Shame he had to become governor of CA. Peter principle, and all of that.
I don’t see the other side here, other than people going through life looking for reasons to be perturbed. Life will always give you reasons for such if that is your goal.
At least he wasn’t walking about the gorilla his dreams.
Exactly what race are gorillas?
If a white person had said it, the left would twist it into a so-called “racist” comment.
So many stupid people.
Oh, my goodness, a metaphor! Metaphors be raciss!!!
Considering he could call them the “n-word” (as we white guys are required to say/write instead of the actual word if we don’t want to go to prison) and nobody would raise an eyebrow, calling them gorillas couldn’t be much of an issue.
800-pound gorillas
Heck.. THAT’S A COMPLIMENT!
What I meant is a lot of racist blacks think that they look like gorillas more than white people do. Not on an every day basis of course, but as the statement is framed...do you see their side?
I totally agree with your statement as well...and sadly it is many peoples goal.
and LeBron IS the 800 pound gorilla.
