Republican Rep. Diane Black of Tennessee recently cited pornography, along with the deterioration of the family and violent movies, as a contributing factor to gun violence in schools.
Black made the remarks during a listening session with local pastors last week.
"Why do we see kids being so violent? What's out there? What makes them do that?" Black said.
"Because, as a nurse, I go back to root cause. And I think it's a couple things," Black said, listing off deterioration of the family and violent movies, before mentioning pornography.
"Pornography. It's available. It's available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there's pornography there," Black says in the audio. "All of this is available without parental guidance."
She adds, "And I think that's a big part of the root cause, that we see so many young people that have mental illness get caught in these places." In the audio, Black does not detail what it is about pornography that she believes contributes to school shootings.
"I think the context is pretty clear," Black's campaign spokesman Chris Hartline told CNN Tuesday. "Diane believes the breakdown of families and communities plays a significant role in instances of school violence."

A) Not at Aldis, Kroger, or Publix.
B) The internet.
I would think video games where you shoot up and kill people by the 100s for hours and days at a time. I wish they would show on the news the results of shootings and such, not pretty but when it is cartoon and sanitized its not real.
She is right.
I wish I could put my hands on two recent articles that had relevant and credible sources, links and facts that showed porn (among other morally decadent issues) were a factor in school shootings.
But maybe I can find them later.
Broken families. Even in intact families, kids left to raise themselves. Game culture that isolates a kid from reality. No jobs for kids, which again leaves kids isolated from reality. And schools that are moral vacuums.
The job thing, I just thought of, and I think its more important than one might think. Kids who work, are connected to reality in a very direct way. Kids that live in game-induced dream land don’t see real life consequences and don’t really connect with people. You see it more and more. Combined with the rest, its a recipe for a lost generation.
So basically the Parkland shooting was caused by porn? I just thought the ahole just hated everyone.
I think she’s onto something. Males take risks to try and get female attention and, if they can’t impress them socially, they will do so through violence.
Pornography is useless without the requisite pornograph to pay it on.
You nailed it with the exeption of the breakdown of the normal family unit due to social programs that make it financially good to not have a family unit. If the boy friend or husband is in the home and has a job, the welfare benefits are reduce. This is perfect cause and effect.
Pornography unless it is degrading physical violence is not a contributing factor. If it is such it is a major factor as it desensitizes the young to violence and obscene violence against others. It thus becomes normal to them.
She is right, but the people of TN are so often wrong.
I’ve seem some dumb stuff on CNN and out of the orifices of our elected officials, but this is right up there (or down there) with any of it. The kind of moronic crap that can make one embarrassed to identify as a conservative.
“”Pornography. It’s available. It’s available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. “
Where the heck does she shop for groceries?
Pornography? Are we now to believe that wood causes mass shootings?
I am going to not go out on any sort of limb at all and say that no longer expelling problem students is the primary cause.
If you have students assaulting other students, expel them. If you have students fantasizing about murder, expel them. If you have students stealing, expel them.
One more thing.
Stop conflating harassment with assault and lumping the two together under the term “bullying.” They are not the same and merit different responses.
All this time I thought it was the gun’s fault.
Your attempted mockery by oversimplification fails.
Widespread pornography and the acceptance thereof is both a symptom and a contributing cause of the ongoing coarsening, degradation, and dehumanization of our popular culture. Animalistic behavior, including casual resort to violence, are a predictable result of a degraded, dehumanized culture. Pornography, in isolation, did not cause that jerk to murder his classmates. Pornography, along with widely accepted: violent entertainment, vulgar and abusive entertainment, promiscuity, abortion, atheism, socialism, and other similar factors combine to form a culture which is a psychological toxic waste dump. One should hardly be surprised to find casual violence in such an environment.
