Miss America is scrapping its swimsuit competition and will no longer judge contestants based on physical appearance, the organization announced Tuesday.
"We are no longer a pageant," Gretchen Carlson, the first former Miss America to be named chair of the Board of Trustees of the Miss America Organization, said on "GMA." "We are a competition."
In place of the swimsuit portion of the competition, Miss America contestants will now take part in a live interactive session with the judges, according to the organization.
The contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will be asked to demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America.
The organization is also getting rid of the evening gown portion of the competition and instead asking contestants to wear attire that makes them feel confident, expresses their personal style and shows how they hope to advance the role of Miss America.

Devolving into lesbians in pantsuits.
Great - now they’ll have a bunch of fat slobs ‘competing’ and they’ll be wondering why their ratings are taking such a dive.
I have to put this move right up there with the fellows at Yeti...among the DUMBEST things that I’ve seen in my lifetime.
I haven’t watched one of these vapid shows in decades....................

I personally believe
that
U.S. Americans are unable to do so
because,
uhmmm,
some
people out there in our nation dont have maps and uh,
I believe that our,
I,
education like such as
uh,
South Africa,
and uh,
the Iraq,
everywhere
like
such as,
and
I believe that they should,
uhhh,
our education over here in the US should help the US,
uh,
should help South Africa,
it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us.
Yep. Who wants to look at their figures when we can listen to these women?
Hmmm ... and what exactly is the job of Miss America? I thought it involved looking good and flashing a million dollar smile.
The reason the MAP had viewers was NOT to hear their boring life stories, see their amateurish “talents” or hear their politically correct answers to meaningless questions. People watched to see attractive women in swimsuits and heels. With the internet and the loosening of TV standards, that became unnecessary decades ago. Without the swimsuit competition they might as well just broadcast it on the radio.
Maybe a wet burka contest.
When does a tranny pose as a girl and compete? Wanna bet it will happen? Wanna bet the dickless wonder will get first prize?
Thank you for NOT calling HIM Caitlin.
I guess it’s time for Michelle Obama to enter the contest. She can be Miss America, married to a nobel prize recipient.
That one is painful to watch but in her defense, I think it was a teenager pageant, not Miss America.
So Rosie O’Donnell has a shot?
not everybody in those stupid beauty contests sleep with the judge.
She's a frontrunner!
Stepping up the game...leaving Lena Dunham to complain.
"It's not fair, just not fair eliminating the gown part...that's my strong suit."
I wonder why nobody has taken their place with an updated beauty pageant? That is, women displaying what they think men would like in a potential wife. Elements of Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?, The Dating Game, and interviews with contestant about what they look for in men and what they think men look for in women.
Each then model in four different outfits: formal dress, swimsuit, business casual, and fantasy (cosplay).
The only time we’ve watched a beauty contest was Bullock’s Miss Congeniality movie.
Meh. It’s a relic from another world, another time.
It always seemed silly and frivolous. Now it just seems ridiculous.
Some of these women were really talented. They could do things I did not think were possible.
