Everything after the first two is crap. Exponentially worse with each subsequent iteration.

Return of the Jedi was just stupid. It’s target audience had to be 12 year olds. (or younger)

I like Riddick. I wonder if they are going to make more?

Why does everyone think The Empire Strikes Back is so good?

Amen. For me this does not compute. It was a far second place from the Original Star Wars movie, but it was quite a lot better than anything which followed.

After the original movie, the Star Wars franchise went through increasing levels of suckage with each subsequent iteration.

Star Wars I (1977)—far and away the best Star Wars movie. It’s a travesty that any sequels or antecedents were ever made.

Yup. They just ruined the magic of the original.

I simply do not grasp why anyone ranks "Empire strikes back" ahead of the original Star Wars. I don't see the appeal of it at all.

I'll grant that it was better than everything that has followed it, but I do not see how anyone can think it is better than the original.

The first one is still the “best”.

Here we agree on something. :)

Follow up question. Did you cheer for the “Rebels”, or for the “Empire”? :)

OMG! Another one. What makes "Empire", "Clearly the best"? It isn't clear to me at all. I liked it, but I place it a distant second from the Original, with all subsequent movies having exponentially increasing levels of suckage with each iteration.

What is "clearly the best" about "Empire"? I don't get it.

However, when I saw Last Jedi on DVD, I was temped to fast forward through what I considered way too long, boring passages. Thinking at the end, is it my age of 70 or just bad filmmaking that has me finding Star Wars not enjoyable as it once was?
.......
I’m 65. I recall the same excitement as you with the first star wars. I have gone to all of them since but with less and less enthusiasm. during the last film I thought after about 2 minutes that I didn’t care about any of the characters. I have not seen the one in theatres now. I may go to it. the ratings on rotten green tomatoes movie audience review (NOT critics review) are in the 70’s. I’ve found that at minimum a movie needs audience ratings of 80’s to be watchable and audience 90’s to make you feel like you got your money’s worth. the critics reviews just tell you whether the critics consider the movie to be politically correct or not.

Neither. Like the man says, I have no “skin in the game” so I didn’t cheer on anyone - except Solo pursuing the girl.

Your response reminds me of the immortal words of Homer Simpson".

" It's just a bunch of stuff that happened."

The critical element to movie story telling is Suspension of Disbelief. In order for the story to “take life” one must be able to immerse oneself into the storyline, the plot, and (I think especially) the characters. If one cannot do that one is reduced to viewing a “bunch of stuff that happened”.

Vader was too cartoonish and campy to be scary. Leia and Luke were cardboard and unsympathetic characters. I appreciated the Obi Wan character but I liked Solo best. Because Solo played a less prominent role to Luke I didn’t engage with the storyline as much.

So yeah - for me at least Star Wars was “a bunch of stuff that happened”. I enjoyed it well enough but never a diehard fan.

I was just telling my son this very thing yesterday at lunch. This is exactly right. I empathized with Luke Skywalker, of course.

I liked Han Solo quite a lot, but I had more difficulty imagining myself as him. He was a bit too reckless and greedy, but I did like his willingness to play dirty when necessary. I resonated more with the Young Idealist back in those days.

So yeah - for me at least Star Wars was “a bunch of stuff that happened”. I enjoyed it well enough but never a diehard fan.

Absolutely adored the first one, liked the second, and disliked with increasing levels of dislike, all the rest.

Anyways, I see your point.

I just found it to be more tightly edited. No wasted moments. The characters were more meaningful in their motivations, and it drove the plot more logically. The dialogue was certainly better, as well as the direction. And while the Shakespearian "clown" characters were still employed (R2 and C3PO) as emotional relief, they were toned down a bit and not overdone so as to cheapen the main action. As an added bonus, John Williams composed "The Imperial March" for this installment - probably the greatest piece of classical music in the martial style since Holst's "Mars".

The stinking prequels, ugh maybe someone will “reimagine” better versions of them someday, I don’t understand how Lucas could mangle his own creation so much.

“The taxation of trade routes to
outlaying star systems is in dispute.”

This is a line from the crawler for Episode One. WTF? Now as a political type I could have actually gotten into that, but it was just BS to set up the “greedy” bad guys, it was never explained or made any sense. Garbage except for the awesome Lightsaber duel.

Rouge One I found very unnecessary. But it was worth it for that awesome Vader scene. The “Leia” lookalike was creey as hell though.

I thought Last Jedi was a deal better than Force Awakens (I didn’t even dislike the Casino part) I’d easily put it in as #4 after the original trilogy, and it gives me hope for #9. But no they don’t compare, I don’t think it’s your age. Though I wonder what the real youngins think, ones who grew up with the....prequels, the pitiable souls.

Critics seem to unanimously rate Empire as the best one but the original (I don’t like calling it “A New Hope” wither) will always be my favorite. I first saw it during the 1997 release, I was 13 I guess, I had somehow never seen it on TV so my experience was much the same as yours in 77 I imagine. A powerful enough experience to keep paying 15 dollars to see the new ones in the theater (All but “Sith” which I absolutely loathed at first viewing, turns out it was a pirate version with some scenes cut out, be it still sucked).

Lucas should be arrested for the character assassination of Darth Vader.

I think the problem with Empire is that it doesn’t stand alone like the original Star Wars does. I like Empire a lot, but you need to have watched the first one to fully get into it.
