I simply do not grasp why anyone ranks "Empire strikes back" ahead of the original Star Wars. I don't see the appeal of it at all.

I'll grant that it was better than everything that has followed it, but I do not see how anyone can think it is better than the original.

I just found it to be more tightly edited. No wasted moments. The characters were more meaningful in their motivations, and it drove the plot more logically. The dialogue was certainly better, as well as the direction. And while the Shakespearian "clown" characters were still employed (R2 and C3PO) as emotional relief, they were toned down a bit and not overdone so as to cheapen the main action. As an added bonus, John Williams composed "The Imperial March" for this installment - probably the greatest piece of classical music in the martial style since Holst's "Mars".
