In the wake of the best Memorial Day stretch since 2014 with $227.6M, the box office will now go to sleep this weekend.
While there are wide releases, many of them are counterprogramming options to the event titles out there. Disneys Solo: A Star Wars Story will pull in a second weekend in the low $30Ms, experiencing a 60% drop (from its $84.4M FSS opening) on par with other event titles during their post Memorial Day weekends, read X-Men: Days of Future Past and Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End. Thats because this weekend is coming off a beefy Sunday where moviegoing was roughly equal to Saturdays business. Even if Solo opened higher, it would still likely face a 55%-60% decline.

Definitely.
They knowingly put out a bad product. When people complain about it, they insult them.
I don’t think these people are stupid. It feels like Disney bought Lucasfilm to kill it.
I think it has more to do with different mindsets. Marvel Studios started out smaller and built it’s way up, and they do put out multiple films per year. At Lucasfilm, I am pretty sure that their mindset is feeling guaranteed to be top notch because it’s Star Wars.
That’s goodwill. Brand equity.
It’s why Last Jedi did pretty well, but when the word got out, bombed in China.
This woman running Lucasfilm is going to kill the company. Whether that’s the goal, or that’s a side-effect remains to be seen.
People have not seemed to tire of Marvel movies, and like you said, they are producing a multiple movies a year at this point.
Perhaps it is because they haven’t gone overboard on the SJW in the movies. But once they do, profits will drop, and the buzz will be again “overexposure”.
>>Now they need to stretch it in to a 3hr movie with talking tadpoles.<<
May the Warts be with you.
#5 Yoda was on Sesame Street in a galaxy far far away... : )
The Yoda movie is how he escapes the show and learns the Force.
The Han movie itself was not too bad but the actor with the David Cassidy haircut was not right for the role. Also everything was too grungy looking. At least the Empire made the crews clean their ships.
Capes! No capes should be worn but they wear them in that part of the universe.
The women in the film was too short and just plain looking.
Han could do way better. The romance had no chemistry.
Chewie was Chewie. It looks like he eats people when he is caged up. Really.
The action was to frenetic as the Star War 1,2,3 movies were after the originals.
The liberalism and early p.c. of the 60's and early 70's killed the cowboy and war genres. The only ones that could get made featured anti-heroes.
Star Wars brought back the cowboy movie as space cowboys, in a fun, fresh format with characters the audience enjoyed. The lads could blast their way across the Galaxy having a grand old time while killing Nazis, I mean, storm troopers. Leia was the updated damsel in distress, at once sexy and believable as a leader of the rebellion. Carrie Fisher should have relished her role and fame instead of apologizing for Leia and throwing shade on others.
But, it couldn't last. The Empire didn't just strike back, it reined in the rebellion. Gloom and doom, over-serious and over complicated plots, no clear good and evil and characters that couldn't have fun blowing up a Death Star if they tried.
The original cast were not Lawrence Olivier and Katherine Hepburn, but they were right in the grove of the Matinee movie. We enjoyed them and cared about them. I just don't care about the new cast and wonder how they could manage a weekend together much less save the Galaxy. I suppose I'll watch some of them on Netflix.
“how they could manage a weekend together much less save the Galaxy”
If you decide to watch any of the new ones, check out Rogue One ... it’s basically the setup for 1977’s Star Wars. Specifically, watch the last 45 minutes or so. It’s just fun space battles and laser blasts :-). The beginning and end of the film are great ... the middle not so much :-).
Regarding the new trilogy ... they had a decent cast of new characters dreamed up ... I thought the idea of a recluse, junk scavenging woman having strong force powers, a deserter from the empire, and the best starfighter pilot in the galaxy made for an interesting trio to fight that brit Hux guy, Captain Phasma (loved that name), Kylo Ren, and Supreme Leader Snoke on paper ... but when you have to inject today’s PC nonsense into the formula, it all falls apart quickly.
They should make the whole cast homosexuals. That will bring in more fans. /s
I thought the movie was absolutely terrific. So sorry it’s not doing well, it was a lot of fun.
