A large wolf-like animal shot and killed in Montana has wildlife officials and social media wondering what it was.
A rancher shot the gray-haired beast on May 16 when it ventured too close to his livestock in Denton.
The rancher reported that he killed a wolf but wolf specialists looked at photos of the animal and doubted it was a purebred wolf, ABCFoxMontana reported.
The canine teeth were too shot, the front paws too small and claws on the front paw were too long, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman Bruce Auchly said in a news release Thursday.
Nevertheless, social media was quick to pronounce the animal as everything from a wolf to a wolf hybrid to something mythical," he said.

If these things are anything like regular dogs, they'd hump darn near anything, including other males and their owner's leg.
"A dingo-wolf hybrid ate my baby."
And I thought I was the only one aware of that fact that coy-wolves were roaming the forests of New York State. I live North and West of you in Tioga County, NY.
A chucacabra who hadn’t lost its hair yet.
That’s it. Drop the mike.
haha!
It’s hard to pretend they aren’t here when one trucks right past you in daylight. ;-)
We have some outdoor cats. ‘Ours’ come in at night but there are some ferals who belong with the property (meaning they were here when we moved) and occasionally one disappears. If it is in conjunction with hearing the pack come through we figure they became lunch.
Just wait ‘til one or more of those big tawny kitties (that absolutely do not live in NY) likes your corner of Tioga County. Then you can listen to the wildlife folk tell you you are hallucinating and that scream you heard was merely an owl.. ;-)
Accept a dog with death of alpha male or female, or most of the pack. Lots of wolf shooting in the past.
Its a pitbull.
Josh Gates needs to get on the case.
He uncovered intriguing evidence the thylacine may not be extinct as previously thought...
This could be fodder for a new “Expedition Unknown” episode since the showed moved to the Discovery Channel.
Those who believe the stories of them being alive at that time seem to want it to be found to be Chasmaporthetes ossifragus, the only hyena in North America.
Thx!
Boston sadness

Chupacabra.
When the Chupacabra makes it that far north, it gets protection and is identified by its new name, ChupaDACA.
The canine teeth were too shot...spokesman Bruce Auchly said
He must be from the Northeast.
