Untold millions of pages and pixels have been spent on debating whether cars were better back in the day, and consensus has been reached in a few key areas. Better looking? No doubt. More emotional, more visceral? And how. But safer? Not a chance—as shown in stark relief by this Toyota dealership's showroom display of a 2018 Camry that got squashed between two semi-trucks on the highway.
A new car showroom is typically filled with flawless examples of a company's latest models, but Toyota of Surprise in Arizona decided to make an exception for the Toyota Camry that saved its driver's life last week. A dealership employee identified as Ramon Suarez was on his way to the airport to pick up a customer when the Camry was rear-ended at speed by a semi-truck. The impact then pushed it forward into the back of another large truck, sandwiching the sedan in a nightmare scenario.
~snip~
As a result, Ramon walked away from the crash with hardly a scratch. It's one thing to read about a car's safety rating, or even see the crash tests performed in clinical, unfeeling fashion—but it's quite another to see the real-world results firsthand. It's remarkable how the rear end was basically annihilated. And after retrieving the crumpled Camry from a tow yard in Phoenix and seeing just how perfectly it had performed, the dealership's general manager Lewis Goldstein had something of an epiphany.

They now have a hatchback!......................
And the big plastic cover on both front and rear of all new cars offered zero protection from the collision.
If you pull those covers off, all cars look the same.
I have a 2015 Sienna. First vehicle I ever bought brand new. Love it.
I liked the VW ad that was on YouTube - with the terrorist setting off the bomb on the inside and the outside view of a bright flash inside with no visible damage on the outside...
That did not get “squashed” between two semis. Hit by two semis yes, but much of the impact is above the frame rails/bumpers. IOW there isn’t anything high tech at those crumple levels, if the trucks had been at speed they still would have scissored the top.
“And the big plastic cover on both front and rear of all new cars offered zero protection from the collision.”
It’s just a cosmetic cover and is not intended to offer any collision protection. It just covers the actual bumper and makes the front and rear of the car look pretty.
My wife and daughter owe their life to my 1999 Camry.
An illegal alien hit them head on in the middle of the night going about 45 mph...
I wish saved the pictures I took. The front end was split open like a tin can. The hood was pushed over the roof..the fenders were both pushed out at 45’ engine pushed under the firewall..
Only minor injuries.
I used to work for a company that made auto glass adhesives. The adhesive had to pass a 30 mph frontal collision and leave the glass intact. Crash tests were good marketing, but one day a customer got into a head on collision an hour after having his windshield replaced.
We managed to find and purchase the car an hour before it was due to be crushed at the boneyard. It made a compelling advertisement.

I know that, but to me it makes the vehicle look cheap and trashy. $75,000.00 Suburban with a big plastic cover front and back. The one on the tail flops in the wind, and wraps full around to the quarter panel.
Same on the luxury cars. Jus a metal frame with fake plastic covers. Selling the customers crap and they come back for more.....
Well, there’s aerodynamic considerations, too. Get that wrong, and your fuel economy will really suffer.
There’s a reason Camry has been at the top of consumer satisfaction surveys for a very long time.
Yup. The fact the rear tires are still aligned is proof. It hit way higher than the car bumper.
They should get this corolla also. Its 10 times worse and they survived.

That should buff right out.
That is an interesting video.
The Bel Air lost badly.
Modern cars are simply meant to accordion to absorb the inertia.
Cars in in 59 were made to look cool with tail fins.
I once owned a 59 Bel Air.
The video made me sad.
You should have moved with them! Plan’s a great place to live!
Don’t listen to Svartalfiar.
Plano is right next to Garland.
If Texas was a body, Garland would be the Anus.
That makes Plano the Perineum!
(Of course, I keed, I keed.)
LOL!
