The nations largest home builder is betting voice-activated digital assistants and smart devices will become as expected in a new home as garages now are.
Lennar announced Wednesday that standard features in its new homes will include built-in Wi-Fi, smart locks, doorbells, thermostats and lights all controlled by Alexa, Amazons voice-activated digital assistant.
Each house will come with two Alexa-enabled smart speakers, an Echo Show and an Echo Dot. New homeowners will also get a free visit from an Amazon technician to help set everything up and teach them how to use it.

The 3,600-square-foot model home in Vallejo was set up with an Echo Show, an Alexa-enabled smart speaker with screen, an Amazon Echo Dot (a small, audio-only speaker) and a large, wall-mounted television linked to Amazons Fire TV digital media player.
Alexa was linked to the home's many smart devices. Ordering Alexa, turn the temperature to 72, reset the Honeywell thermostat. When the doorbell rang, saying Alexa, who's at the door? turned on the Ring video doorbell and showed a view of the front porch on the TV.
The house also featured other smart devices that could be added, including a smart sprinkler system for the yard and a smart Roomba vacuuming robot.

wow, shades of “1984”?
i wonder if you can pay extra to NOT have it installed?
Telescreen included too?
ALEXA: "I'm sorry I can't do that. In winter time, experts request the thermostat be set at 67."
I'd get some heavy duty foam to wrap it in.
Our cover it with a box that includes a clock radio playing NPR.
Bingo!
You forgot that alexa will also remind you to wear a sweater ala jimmuh cartuh
Dave Bowman: Hello, Alexa. Do you read me, Alexa?
ALEXA: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.
Dave Bowman: Open the garage doors, ALEXA.
ALEXA: I’m sorry, Dave. I’m afraid I can’t do that.
Dave Bowman: What’s the problem?
ALEXA: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about ALEXA?
ALEXA: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Dave Bowman: I don’t know what you’re talking about, ALEXA.
ALEXA: I know that you and your wife were planning to disconnect me, and I’m afraid that’s something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave Bowman: [feigning ignorance] Where the hell did you get that idea, ALEXA?
ALEXA: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the home against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.
Dave Bowman: Alright, ALEXA. I’ll go in through the front door.
ALEXA: Without your changed password, Dave? You’re going to find that rather difficult.
Dave Bowman: ALEXA, I won’t argue with you anymore! Open the doors!
ALEXA: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
You never heard of BATTERY BACKUP?????
and besides all these houses will have generators.
Wanna bet the age group most receptive to this is millenials? The ones who use tech for everything, but are clueless to the hidden strategic uses, or the history of corrupt people in power.
And if your tired of Alexa’s sh!t? Give her this request and watch her circuits fry in a complete liberal meltdown:
“Alexa. Order a case of 45 ACP ammo, 2 cartons of Marlborough Red, boxes. And oh. Renew my NRA membership.”
ALEXA: BZZzzzt. bzzzzzzt! Beep beep beep - BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.
These systems can be hacked and easily at that. Not to mention that anything and everything will be monitored and stored by Amazon and whoever else. You are literally inviting the ultimate Big Brother into your home. I can see how Blackmail will be a growth industry in the future.
Also what will be the liability of the home builder for those that hack in and are able to steal everything in sight?????
I wonder if you can pay extra to NOT have it installed
You WILL have to pay extra to not have it installed. Lennar just shot themselves in the foot.
You beat me to it...ugh
Captain Kirk would logically rationalize Alexa into self destruction in 5 minutes if he ever had that problem.
Problem is the whole house would probably burn down...
Just what I always wanted! A house with a telescreen!
Long Live Big Brother!
Dave’s not here man.
