Johnny Depp: how Hollywood's biggest star fell from grace

As another lawsuit hits the actor, accusing him of creating a ‘toxic’ work environment, his status as the industry’s most wanted leading man shows no sign of returning.

The descriptions sound like a typical day at sea for Captain Jack Sparrow: “volatile”, “reckless”, “vices”, “chaos”, “hurricane”.

The Pirates of the Caribbean character is, after all, a drunken pirate who sails through fiascos and misadventures.

It is Johnny Depp, however, not Sparrow, who is accused of presiding over such mayhem in a drama playing out not on screen but in court. Oh, how I loved you, Johnny Depp. Now I see the purple-tinted truth Hadley Freeman Hadley Freeman Read more

Two bodyguards made the allegations in a lawsuit this week which piled fresh acrimony on Depp’s reputation, renewing doubts over his future as Hollywood’s quirkiest and possibly most beloved leading man.

The multi-claim lawsuit over unpaid wages and working conditions detailed a lifestyle of dysfunction and chaos.

Eugene Arreola and Miguel Sanchez alleged that a “financial hurricane” and a “toxic” environment enveloped Depp’s Hollywood Hills compound from 2016.

The suit alleges: “Often times plaintiffs were forced to protect Depp from himself and his vices while in public. An incident at a local nightclub involved plaintiffs alerting Depp of illegal substances visible on his face and person while preventing onlookers from noticing Depp’s condition.”

More damning allegations can be expected if the ex-employees obtain a jury trial in Los Angeles superior court. Depp’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment over the latest allegations. Advertisement

It is a puzzle straight out of Hollywood Babylon: how can a star who has reputedly earned more than $650m struggle to pay his bills?

A good point. One getting on drugs and one getting off drugs.

That’s why they call it dope.

Yes he was in Platoon.

A lot of famous actors in that movie.

He also needs to get into a good rehab program to get cleaned up and then stay cleaned up. Quit drugging and drinking, Johnny. If Joe Perry, Steven Tyler and Keith Richards (and many others) can do it, you can too.

>> I liked him in Willy Wonka. That was about it. <<

That'z a bizarre reversal. I like MOST of his movie roles (Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Finding Neverland, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Public Enemies, Dark Shadows, etc.) but absolutely LOATHED his take on Willy Wonka. He's obviously never read the book and decided to make the character "edgy" by playing him as a cross between Marilyn Manson and Michael Jackson. His Wonka made me want to punch him every time he was on screen, and was 1000X worse than the iconic version Gene Wilder played.

From talking to other people, there seems to be pretty wide spread consensus on this.

Well, I never read the book either, so you may be on to something.

The character in the Depp Wonka belonged in a mental institution. Seriously.

Meanwhile Robert Downey Jr has gone low to high , higher , highest in past 10 years? From 1996 to 2001 had he drug and legal troubles.

I believe his wake-up call came from a tough-love judge, who sentenced him to jail time because he kept showing up in his courtroom. After that stint in jail, he straightened up; and, he has been earning money in his craft ever since. The judge did him a huge favor.

Too bad he only beat his WOMEN. If he had abused a boy toy, Harry Potter might have removed him from the franchise.

I did think he could act, but after the third movie of him enveloped in makeup as a creepy weirdo costumed freak, I realized that was all he had. Never was fond of him. Too fakey. And look, what an idiot. He didn’t help people with those millions, he wasted them on dumb things.

Loser.

But contrast him in Wonka with the truly lovable human being Gene Wilder. Sorry, no comparison.

Robert Downey Jr is a good person deep inside and he has seen the sickness in Hollywood and at sacrifice to himself is trying to expose it. He did have a genetic tendency toward substance abuse but I think he overcame it.

I was standing in the deli line at a Super Value grocery store in Minocqua Wisconsin when Depp was in the area filming that John Dillinger movie. He was very unassuming and I recognized him right away, no one else did. He said he was very impressed with the beauty of northern Wisconsin and was hoping to come back some day. Seemed like a normal guy to me, no pretensions. Guess he has demons like the rest of us.

I don't get it. He was an out of control substance abusing jerk. In other words, a celebrity. If you don't like working for jerks, quit. Why sue years later?

Only time i had seen him not “quirky” was Nightmare on Elm Street..

21 Jump Street. Played straight, made him famous.
