The Hon. Galusha A. Grow has really stupid facial hair. We have parishioners whose last name is Galusha; they’re liberal Yankees.

I found it suspicious that Grow switched his given names of Aaron Galusha to Galush Aaron so that he would be called Galusha instead of Aaron.

Re the “Spring Fashions” on page 12, GAH! I wear a skirt or dress all the time, except for my Scout leader uniform, but if I had to wear all that stuff, I think I’d dress as a man and join the cavalry.

Wikipedia says Galusha or Galutia is a German surname based on the root “Gall” or “Gaul.”
It’s not a worthwhile day if one doesn’t learn something new!

You think his family was Jewish? No reason to think so. His wiki page says he was "christened." It just seems odd to me that someone would prefer to be called Galusha. Maybe that is just my 20th century sensibility talking.

Maybe he was avoiding the bad odor of Aaron Burr! I don’t see why a person would call himself “Galusha” on purpose, either ... but maybe it was a family name with local cachet.

They had such good command of the English language in those days. Rhetorical skills were still in vogue! Not the backwards rubes that many think of those from the 19th Century.

May 7, 1858. Abraham Lincoln photographed at Beardstown, Illinois. Stephen A. Douglas photographed at Washington, D.C.
Formerly in the Lincoln Monument collection at Springfield, Illinois. Mr. Lincoln wore a linen coat on the occasion. The picture is regarded as a good likeness of him as he appeared during the Lincoln Douglas campaign. (From Wikipedia, List of photographs of Abraham Lincoln.)

Even less-educated people often had an excellent command of language, due to exposure to the Bible, preachers, political speeches, hanging out at the courthouse. (Gotta pass the time somehow!)
Spelling wasn’t much of a thing, though.
