They had such good command of the English language in those days. Rhetorical skills were still in vogue! Not the backwards rubes that many think of those from the 19th Century.

Even less-educated people often had an excellent command of language, due to exposure to the Bible, preachers, political speeches, hanging out at the courthouse. (Gotta pass the time somehow!)

Spelling wasn’t much of a thing, though.
