NASHVILLE — In the South, there sometimes seems no place more omnipresent than Waffle House, with its yellow-and-black signs surfacing near interstate exits, dotting night life districts and showing up in wealthy suburbs and run-down rural towns alike.
The ubiquity, cultivated over decades of syrup-soaked waffles and strong coffee, makes the 24-hour chain’s booths and barstools a round-the-clock reflection of the South and invites every kind of story, some chronicled on Instagram, others in mug shots.
“There are the drunk Waffle Houses, the late-night Waffle Houses, Waffle House as a house of freaks, but there’s also this kind of nurturing, idealistic vision of Waffle House,” said John T. Edge, the University of Mississippi scholar of Southern cuisine and culture, who proudly rattled off how his regular order involves three eggs, scrambled with cheese, and grits.
This week, Waffle Houses hundreds of miles apart were at the center of a fatal tragedy and a national controversy: Southeast of downtown Nashville, a gunman opened fire and killed four people, and in southern Alabama, near Mobile, a confrontation between a black woman and white police officers over access to cutlery renewed debates about race and police conduct.
Hours after Sunday’s shooting in Tennessee, a woman gave birth in a Waffle House parking lot.

The times has no business perusing Waffle House. Period.
The Waffle House is the more modern version of the old “rail car diner” that used to be in everytown, USA.
The food is good, and the coffee is NOT strong...I hate strong coffee, and I think Waffle House coffee is just fine.
So far this week some New York columnists, one at the “Times”, and the other at the “New Yorker” have decided to single out Southern based businesses with fake news, and slanderous comments.
They’ve attacked Chick-Fil-A only for the Cathy family’s Christian beliefs (even though the customer lines circle the block trying to get a chicken sandwich.) The Mayor - de Blasio (Big Bird) has even called for a boycott of the business...the first time in my entire life I have heard of a city mayor calling for boycott of a business in their town, serving the public and paying taxes.
Buy, anytime a conservative, or religious person or company does well, the left goes bananas...they can’t stand it that conservatism works. It’s on display with conservative run cities, while liberal run cities - like Detroit, Baltimore, Chicago, etc are almost broke, and severely crime-ridden.
California, New York, and New Jersey are hemorrhaging residents as fast as “U-Haul” can process the paperwork, and there are so many Yankees moving down here to the south that I’m starting to use phrases like, “youse guys”, “Yutes”, and “Pahk yeh cah in Havaad Yahd”. I’d try to tell them to “stay up yonder”, but they have no idea where “yonder” is.
Getting back to Waffle House...the only thing New Yorkers used to say about Waffle House, was to make fun of “grits”...but now that the transplanted thugs are causing disturbances in the Waffle Houses, they have turned their diatribe into full blown attacks on the South...and just when we thought the time of Yankee “carpetbaggers” was over and done.
The writer mentioned “drunks” at Waffle House...but people have always went there after a night of partying to drink coffee, and have “midnight breakfast”. I guess the New York Times would rather people just drive home drunk.
I used to play in bands, and after a gig we’d always hit the Waffle House to get some chow, and to just relax after four house of playing...it was always late at night, as when the clubs close, it usually takes the band up to an hour to pack up the gear and leave.
These writers act like someone has pulled a gun and is forcing them to dine at one of these places, or even have a Chicken sandwich; truth is, we don’t give a damn about you coming here, and had rather you didn’t. Us, and our “Waffle Houses” got along fine for years, without you.
But, everybody wants to be a journalists...the market is so crowded, that they’ll write about ANYTHING to get published.
I like the Waffle House...the food is good enough, the coffee is great, and the atmosphere is cordial. You can always find one, even in the dead of night. And Chick-Fil-A, they’re the top fast food place in the country now, so eat that, New Yorker.
They’ll pry my Waffle House from my cold hash browns.
lol
That, and pretend that they never see the kid in the bar on a regular basis.
That’s good...LOL
I’m almost 70...A cute little cashier once, as a joke, asked for my card when I was getting some beer...
I told her the only time I got carded was when checked to make sure I get a senior citizens discount...
Waffle House Waitress Wins Big In The Lottery ($10 Million), Loses At Tax Court
In 2011, four men who regularly ate together at a Waffle House in Georgia were arrested, accused of plotting attacks on government buildings.
Boy - that had to reach for that one. I wonder if they ever did an article that says “In 1999, 20 illegals from foreign countries plotted attacking the World Trade Center and other buildings using airplanes....”
That looks like leftovers after it came back up.
My band would go to Waffle House after gigs at 3 in the morning. But I miss HoJos! Fried clams!
Ha ha!
I'm almost 75.
The other day when I checked out at Lowes Building Supply, the young Black cashier asked me for my phone number, I said no, she said why not, I said that I'm tired of you young girls calling in the middle of the night asking for a date. Her and everyone in the line had a nice chuckle.

Tom Menino,Boston, tried to stop them from even opening.

Great drunk food.
WH is all over the country now. Yes, even up north.
Like the old stainless steel “greasy spoon” diners that were all over New Joisey and the White Castle murder burgers are Northeastern “things” we have fond memories of. My friends and I would at times stumble into the Benidx Diner (still there) on Rt17 near Teterboro Airport, after a night of bar hopping and the food was delicious. We also appreciate Waffle House and Chick Fil A since we moved to FL.
Gee, I wonder why that was omitted?
I must have a dozen of them within 20 miles of me.
I would bet there are more oddballs in Central Park on a given day than in all the Waffle Houses on a given day.
The Times shows its lack of geographic and cultural diversity.
That’s cruel.......................to both of them!...................
Welcome to the South.
We don’t have White Castle, we have the Krystal instead...same thing, different name.
Back in the 50’s Krystal burgers were great, I used to order them by the bag fully. Ten-cents each, and always hot and fresh. Today’s Krystals are no match to the olden days...buns are usually cold, fries are soggy, and service is lousy.
The whole country has taken the road to mediocrity, and good customer service, and good restaurants, are hard to find.
