It was hard to watch Mark Zuckerberg's congressional hearing without liking congress a lot less. In between the rampant showboating and clumsy soundbites, it became clear that a lot of legislators don't know enough about technology to competently regulate it. And even if they did, the federal government's track record on surveillance and privacy rights is less than sterling.

No one is talking about the fact that Mark Z. was not even sworn in before his testimony. How many of us average people would have gotten such a deal? Hillary got the same ‘nice treatment’ from the FBI in 2016. My guess is that was the only was he was going to give testimony at that time without a subpoena.
One thing was so bad (in an end-of-the-US-as-we-knew-it way) that it was funny: Blacks complained about the low number of black FB employees and none on the Board of Trustees. But they didn't have one word of support for Diamond and Silk. Conservatives complained about Diamond and Silk being disallowed access of FB because they're dangerous, but not about the lack of diversity in FB employees.
But NOBODY complained about the use and mostly abuse of H1B Visas by FB. One can only conclude that there's no one in the DC swamp that cares about US citizens being replaced with cheaper labor, as long as it's someone they don't agree with.
After that hearing, I pray that DC doesn't get involved in regulating these sites. I trust MarkZ more than I trust the DC Swamp.
Well most of those Congresscriters have no idea how something like Facebook works or how people even have access. It’s something that just “happens” to them. They particularly the GOP ones were a very poorly prepared bunch! As usual the GOP never fail to miss an opportunity to score some positive PR points. All GOP critters did was confirm in the mind of millennials their clueless old farts! Cruz did well but the others did so poorly that Cruz’s performance was enhanced by their bad performance!
rich ceos don’t lie. Didn’t you read the constitution?
We’ve managed to create more of an Orwellian dystopia than even Orwell himself could have ever imagined:
* Where human beings no longer interact in an arena of physical presence and discourse, where individual mannerisms and reactions can be directly observed.
* Where all are driven by a wholly fabricated and frenetic “immediacy of need and gratification.”
* Where the speed of information is purposely designed to defeat the need for rigorous examination for objective truth and reliability.
* Where unfounded and unqualified opinions that are unencumbered by reality, have replaced proven, observable and historical facts as the new evidentiary standard.
* Where 2% minority beliefs are granted greater weight, validity and exposure than the 98% majority.
* Where hate, outrage and death threats can be launced against others from anonymous locations without fear of confrontation or the consequences of retribution.
* Where, like Gregorian chants for the mindless unwashed masses, entire political belief systems are reduced to ethereal and meaningless, but easily-digestible slogans like “Hope And Change,” “Yes We Can” and “I;m With Her.”
* Where the need to form and develop one’s own original critical opinions and beliefs are replaced by parroting those of other’s via “Like” and “Share.”
* Where, when “triggered,” one’s world can be completely scrubbed and sanitized of uncomfortable dissenting opinions and beliefs simply by clicking on “Unfriend.”
This list goes on and on, and yet we wonder why our society has become so simplistic, polarized and entrenched? Still, this is what being herded into separate “identity silos” is all about. Anyone who believes that all of this is purely coincidental couldn’t find themselves further from the truth.
He didn't testify because there's no crime. Just a bunch of publicity hound politicians.
There is no excuse for being stupid. With only a few exceptions, most politicians are morons or just pretend to be imbeciles to avoid doing their sworn duty. They are so pathetic. 9/11 was the catalyst for government and tech entities to totally rape American privacy.
It's the ' democrat rule of lawless'... corrupt democrats get passes - Republicans are held to the highest standards.
The trusts should be broken up or made to allow for free political speech. google, FB YT
bringing him to washington was pathetic. it wasn’t like when Rockefeller got taken to the woodshed.
FACEBOOK REALITY CHECK-—Nebraska Republican Sen. Ben Sasse’s brilliant line of questioning exposed some of the problems with handing over these responsibilities to Zuckerburg———the realtime HAL from “2001: A Space Odyssey”..... “Can you define hate speech?” Sasse asked. Zuckerberg admitted that beyond calls for violence, he couldn’t come up with a definition of the sort of speech that should be banned by an algorithm.
Say what? Zuck can’t define hate speech? Bullhockey. Not for the cameras, he cant. Little lyin’ POS.
Let me help Zuck with that. Herewith is uber-liberal Facebooks censorship up close....and its not very pretty.
A Michigan House of Representatives and state lottery commissioner submitted his reelection announcement to Facebook........but the Facebook Nazis rejected his ad because it doesnt follow Facebook Advertising Policies. Facebook does not allow ads that contain shocking, disrespectful or sensational content, including ads that depict violence or threats of violence.
So what was the reelections ads content that made Facebook go ballistic?
In its entirety: Im proud to announce my candidacy for State Senate. Lansing needs conservative, West Michigan values, and as our next State Senator, I will work to strengthen our economy, limit government, lower our auto insurance rates, balance the budget, stop sanctuary cities, pay down government debt and be a Pro-Life, Pro-Second Amendment leader for the people. We learned belatedly that Facebook sent “a doctor” on a secret mission to ask hospitals to share patients confidential health data.
The whitewashed story for public consumption is Facebook asked several major U.S. hospitals to share
anonymized data about their patients (eg. illnesses and prescription info), for a proposed research project.
Facebook said it intended to match it up with user data it collected, to help the hospitals figure out which patients might need special care or treatment.
Oh please, this is so much BS......language designed to paper over another one of many of Facebooks nefarious activities.
As we have learned to our dismay, the public Facebook-all sweetness and light says one thing for public consumption,
but behind the scenes is a different story.
REALITY CHECK-—coordinating medical data with F/B’s data vacuuming, Facebook could get valuable info to P/Parenthood
abortion chambers and baby body parts sales on students intimacies...... their sex lives .......and their views on birth control and abortion.
You Tube has a comment on this?
Pot? Meet Kettle! You Tube censors Conservatives as they see fit, too.
I thought Cruz’s performance was very telling about the intellectual advantages both Cruz and Mark Z have compared to the rest of them. Ted Cruz very skillfully set up the Diamond and Silk case in a way that Mark Z had to respond in support of them. And at the end of it, Mark Z had praise for Cruz’s well framed and prepared questioning. I got the distinct feeling that Zuckerberg would rather have an honest, informed discussion with adversaries than to suffer with fools.
Just once, I wish someone being sworn in would say - "No". I don't swear to tell the whole truth. And if you don't ask the right questions, because you're too stupid to understand the topic, I'm not going to help you out by volunteering information.
BTW, does freedom of speech give one a right to lie? Just thinking out loud.
Good stuff.
Zuckerberg should have been flogged and then put on his private jet for home.
Same with the CEO for Google.

I know....then what was the point?
