DETROIT (AP) A black 14-year-old boy who got lost in a Detroit suburban neighborhood while trying to get to school was shot at by a white homeowner after knocking on a door to ask directions, prosecutors said Friday, citing home security video and the account of the boy.
Jeffery Zeigler, a retired Detroit firefighter, was arraigned Friday on charges including assault with intent to murder.
Oakland County sheriff's deputies were called to Zeigler's Rochester Hills' home about 8:20 a.m. Thursday after a woman told 911 that her husband had chased a black male who tried to break in. Deputies learned that a shot had been fired and found Brennan Walker unharmed down the street.
Walker's statement to police differed from that given by Zeigler, according to assistant prosecutor Kelly Collins.
"We do have the benefit of home security video," Collins told the court Friday. He said Zeigler's account was not borne out by the video.

I don’t know why, but I’m reminded of another black teen who oft missed the bus to school. I recall, his name was Trayvon Martin.
Black teen who cut school looking to score a quick burglary score for money to get high, came up with lame excuse of asking directions, when caught trying to get into a house.
They give the races ONLY when it’s this way. When it’s the normal way, black against white, they hide the races.
It must be hard to be black when 50 percent of your race are acting like violent thugs.
Re: cell phone
Maybe not in this article, but I found it another article that his mother had taken it away. Sounds like she was being a good parent. I live 15 minutes away from Rochester Hills, on my way to a meeting there this morning. This is a nice area, fairly low crime. Although a minority, Rochester Hills has many black families. Many two parent homes, very good people. From what Im reading locally, the homeowner is in deep trouble. But, as I believe for any case, lets wait until all the facts come out before we start making assumptions either way.
"Man Shoots Teen Who Asked For Directions" is still a story, whatever the race.
It may be even more of a strange and unique story if they were of the same race (though it wouldn't arouse as much controversy).
But is that really what happened? Who did they get the story about asking for directions from? Who else was there?
Stay off of my lawn!
I finished reading the article and got the details. Shouldn't post based on the headline alone.
Its a lie, obvious and blatant. The homeowner has seen too many break ins by black “teens” to wait for it to happen to him. No 14 year old gets so lost, unless he goes to school so infrequently that he may be lost in and out of the classroom. Show us a current photo of this “student” and not a photo of his 6th birthday party.
Put this guy in front of a jury and he will be home by nightfall. Mama and her innocent “child” are liars and any jury could see right through that. This whole thing stinks!
Remember the golden rule, you can shoot them inside your house, if you shoot them outside your house, drag them inside before you call the cops!
Quote of the Day.
I an discerning, not prejudiced.
The crime statistics in that community doesn't support your statement......
Given the layout of multiple subdivisions throughout that area and mine and the routes the buses have to take to pick up kids in a several mile mile radius, I can fully understand why the 14 year old kid might not be able to find his way to school.
Now you can hypothesize all you want about why the kid was knocking on the door, but you'll never be able to prove it. The only facts relevant to this situation is that the homeowner answered a knock on his door, saw a black kid standing there, scared him off with a shotgun then fired at him as he was running away.......
Now, I don't know where you live but here knocking on someone's door or ringing a doorbell doesn't justify getting shot at.
With that being said, it's a sure fire way to keep Jehovah's Witnesses from ever returning......... :)
Thank you for posting a link to this standard daytime urban breaking and entering burglary technique. For those unfamiliar with it, it goes like this:
1. Be a young, fit, male between 15 to 30 years old of any race.
2. Be intent on breaking into unoccupied homes to steal easily stowed small items that can be sold quickly.
3. Dress like a student, wear a hoodie to disguise yourself and carry a backpack for your burglary tools and loot.
4. Cruise the target neighborhood looking for homes that look like the owners might be away at work (cars absent in front being a prime clue)
5. Knock on the door/ring the door bell to see if the homeowner/occupant answers.
6. If someone answers, make some excuse about needing directions to X (part of your cover story) and leave looking for another possibly in occupied house.
7. If there is no answer, go around back where you are out of sight and check the back doors and windows to see if there’s one that can easily be broken into using the burglary tools in your backpack.
8. Glove up, break-in and steal sellable small items that can be easily carried in the backpack.
9. Depending on the value of the items stolen, assess whether you should continue trying other homes in the neighborhood.
10. Continue until you feel uneasy (two to three times) then depart the neighborhood on foot to your car/bus stop to make your escape
11. Sell your loot locally or on line.
12. Repeat until caught.
The problem is that up to Step 7 above, the lost student was indistinguishable from the daytime burgler. While the husbrand is responsible for shooting at the fleeing teen and will be called to account for it in court, let’s not discount the role of his wife in emotionalizing the situation and the role of past experience (both personal and in the neighborhood) in creating the emotional lens the couple were interpreting events through. And last, but not least, the police investigating this case have their own lenses and agendas in interpreting the evidence.
Here is where things get tricky. Unlike CCW, having a gun in the home imposes no training requirement. How, without impacting fundamental 2nd Amendment rights, do you “train” the average home defense gun owner about the proper use of the firearm in home defense and the severe liabilities they face if they get it wrong?
As a retired firefighter, the husband should have had a better capacity to manage the stress of the situation and controlled his impulse to shoot at the fleeing teen. That shot, fortunately a miss, is already proving very costly and the process has barely begun.
“A 14 yr old kid doesn’t know the way to his school so he knocks on the door of a complete stranger at 8 am to ask directions?”
Oh sure he was lost. He was asking directions to the guys wallet and car keys.
“In New York City the method was to ask what time it is, and then jump the guy.”
Or ask for a light.
“If he rode the bus to school, presumably every school day, how could he not know the route to school? “
It’s like knocking on a stranger’s door and asking how to get to your work.
Deletion of video, after an incident, could be taken as an attempt to destroy evidence. Plus, the video might still be recoverable.
