New Yorkers, Here's How to Tell the Difference Between a Tiger and a Raccoon

For whoever called the cops after they confused an innocent little trash panda for a killing machine.

Early Thursday morning, a New York City neighborhood went on red alert after someone called the cops to report a tiger was roaming the streets of Washington Heights, NBC New York reports. A news chopper descended on the neighborhood frantically looking for the fanged beast, while reporters and police scrambled to track it down on the ground. Denizens scanned Citizen, a crime-reporting app, looking for any update on where the bloodthirsty creature might be.

At the end of a harrowing 20 minutes, the cops finally got their hands on the animal wreaking havoc on Upper Manhattan. Turns out it wasn't actually a tiger; instead, whoever reported the thing had, bafflingly, actually spotted a raccoon.

Because it's not already abundantly clear, this seems like an appropriate time to provide a PSA for the lovely, fauna-illiterate citizens of New York—a simple, go-to guide you can turn to any time you're wondering whether what your looking at is a vicious, jungle-dwelling killing machine, or an annoying little trash panda.

For starters, this is a tiger:

This, on the other hand, is a raccoon:

About five years ago Mrs., and I were watching late night TV, and heard the dogs going crazy barking in the back.

We jumped up, and ran to the back to see what might be causing all the ruckus. Couldn’t see anything out there, but the dogs kept barking.

Grabbed a flashlight, and shined it on the pine tree on the hill in the back to see ten eyeballs looking back at me. Five Raccoons clinging to the tree trunk staring at the flashlight.

Told the dogs to shut up, and went back to our TV show.

And yet so many people in NYC think they are better and smarter than those of us who live in the country...

Sometimes they crossbreed and you get a tycoon.

But the leopard can’t change his shorts!
And the tycoon would be lyin’ if it were spotted.

Somehow I just knew your story was going in the raccoon direction—as opposed to the tiger direction.

maybe that raccoon self-identifies as a tiger, in which case, the tiger siting would be true.

“maybe that raccoon self-identifies as a tiger, in which case, the tiger siting would be true.”

Yeah, that’s possible.

Alternatively, the person reporting this could just be a phucking idiot.

Call me adventurous, but I’m going with Door #2 on this one.

Hilarious!

I’m from IN(diana) and camped in NY one time. The raccoons loved the smell of our food. I must say, they have BIG raccoons in NY. The raccoons in IN are much smaller.

However, I know the difference between a tiger and a raccoon.

Great pics. lol I have to share your post.

I’d gone backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. It started raining near dusk, and on one side of the trail I found some really nice A-frames that had been set up. They were raised up from the ground; perfect!

I hauled my backpack up onto the floor, had dinner and camped down for the night.

Round about midnight, I heard rustling under the floor of the A-frame. I was afraid it was a bear! Peeking over the edge of the floor, I shined my flashlight and was met by two beady eyes and the tell-tale mask face. A raccoon. He looked up at me as if to say “Whadda YOU want?” and sauntered away.

The next morning I saw what he’d been after: the prior residents had left some food on the ground.

The Tammany Tiger has been on the loose in New York for almost 200 years. Perhaps it was just the resurgent specter of ‘Boss Tweed’ that was spotted.
