The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are
We planted our pomegranate about 6-7 yrs ago. Last 3 yrs we’ve had it pretty with blossoms but only gotten 3-5 fruit. Birds eat a lot. All I’ve done is put some compost around a couple of times a year and keep it watered. My aunt and uncle had a hedge of them around their back yard that was full of fruit unless we had a late freeze or bad drought. I don’t know how old your pomegranates are but it appears to me they need to be mature to bare well. I’ve harvested, canned jelly and frozen juice off my aunt and uncle’s for over 30 years but their place was sold 2 years ago so I’m hoping mine does better this year. Hubby said he’s buying me fruit tree netting.
Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you. Compost is my only addition. Since my relatives never tried to harvest they didn’t fertilize at all.
Snowing in west metro Minneapolis again! It was 5 degrees last night! March was the coldest ever on record with average temp at 22.9. The next coldest was 23 degrees in 1936. I feel like we live in Narnia with a never ending winter. Normal highs should be approaching 60. It’s 30 as I type.
Before our last round of 6” snow I noticed daylilies and chives coming up. I’m sure the daffodils are up somewhere under the white stuff too.
This is sooooo depressing.
Thanks for the Pic. A picture is worth a thousand words. It’s looking good to me.
Well, as I said we are in a Grand Solar Minimum, and with all the volcanic eruptions going off, the season will be cooler and shorter. I lived in S. Dakota one year. Snowed 21” in October, and continued on and off with out melting.
Finally melted in June. It was depressing. Since we owned a trailer, we had the trailer hauled from Missouri to S. Dakota. So I sometimes, just closed all the curtains, and it seemed like we were still home in Missouri. LOL
You’re talking to a South Dakota native. I remember snowdrifts up to the roof of my family home. It’s not a state for the snow averse.
This is just soooo unusual. I can’t stand it!
Absolutely stunning!!!!!!!
Nice. I would oil that stalk down and stick it on the grill. Yummmmmm
Glad your peach trees are doing well. I donated a peach tree last year to the gardens of our local historical society and as of last fall, it was doing well. I’ll have to get an update on the tree when the gardens caregivers give a garden report at our upcoming meeting. I’m thinking of donating a second peach tree this year when the nursery puts them out for sale, when the weather warms up.
Thank you for replying Wneighbor . . . my Pomegranate is about 3 years old, so it sounds as if I need compost (which I have) and lots of patience . . . Smile!
I’m really liking your greenhouse ! What size is it?
That is truly beautiful too. Thanks for sharing. Whose the lady? Is that Mrs Tubebender?
LOL. It partially covered our trailer window. Once I went out to the mailbox-it was pretty frozen. Just as I opened the mailbox, I sunk down to my chest in the snow. Kinda hard to get out.
I just hope we get some fruit this year. Planted most of them around 2010 and still waiting to get one.
The Greenhouse is 8’x 12’ and 7’ tall at the peak. Not entirely comfortable for Beau, but I’m only 5’1”, so it’s nice for me!

Construction has been easy, so far. We did have one end on backwards, but we’re fixing that. ;)
Of course, it snowed again over night, and we’re down into the 30’s again so no construction, today. :(
Your blooming tree is gorgeous, as is The Mrs.! We planted a ‘Spring Snow’ Crab Apple year before last. It flowers white but produces no messy fruit and will also help cross-pollinate our other six apple trees.
If you want to be in MY garden you have to be Useful and Beautiful. :)
Glad to hear that! Pomegranates remind me of childhood, stealing from a neighbor's many bushes and having seed spitting wars with my brothers and all other neighborhood kids. And back then we didn't have a clue how healthy they were! God bless those old neighbors, I suspect they watched in amusement. They never said a word about not taking their pomegranates, I don't think many people used them for much back then. When my aunt and uncle bought the house with the old pomegranate hedge I had to teach the kids how to crack em open, eat and start the war!
I call her Lady Bender...
Weather has not been good for planting here as well. There are plenty of purchased plants just waiting to get outside and in the ground.
I picked a good week to vacation in sunny Florida. I’m hearing from #1 Marine Daughter that weather conditions at home in Central Missouri have been rather unpleasant since Mrs. Augie and I headed south.
Today has been rainy, but for the most part the weather has been very nice down here. This will blow out overnight and things will be back to sun and fun tomorrow.
