ROANOKE, Va. - Two people are in the hospital after a dog attacked them on the streets of downtown Roanoke Thursday morning.
Witnesses say a man and woman were standing on 1st Street near Campbell Avenue when the dog approached them.
They said the dog seemed friendly at first but then attacked the woman. The pair tried to fight it off but it would not release the woman.
The dog attacked another man who tried to help. It tore his arm and refused to let go.
Bystanders unsuccessfully used a cane, a hammer, and pepper spray on the animal. It was at this point that another man stepped in.
"Someone was yelling to shoot it. I had my gun in my car," said Paul Burek. "I went and got my gun, once it started to pull away from people from people to walk across the road. I shot it."
The dog was killed.
The witnesses described the dog as a "Target dog," which is a bull terrier.
Campbell Avenue has reopened. It was closed from 1st Street to 2nd Street.
The man and woman were taken to the hospital. The man was bleeding profusely. There is no word on their condition.

You are right. I stand corrected on confusing pit bull terriers with bull terriers.
However from the description of the attack, I am expecting final official identification to be a “pit bull terrier.”
No, they are NOT pit bulls. Bull terriers have a completely different head, with an arched Roman nose.
Pit bulls have a big square head and massive jaws. They are generally much larger dogs than bull terriers. They are also much more muscular.

No problem. Glad you can now discern between the 2 breeds. Target's mascot is a charming bull terrier. I guess any breed of dog can have bad apples or be handled incorrectly to produce a biter. Too bad he had to die.

They aren’t all that large. Mine is smaller, and mild mannered. I DNA tested her, because I was told she was a cattle dog, but she looked more like a Pit Bull, and I was right. She came back 80 percent pit bull terrier. I have a pic of her on my profile page, next to my Boxer / Sheppard mix

The question is why? Makes it hard to use your PPD (Personal Protection device) if you know the cops will take it.
The "Our Gang" dog was a pit bull. Some son of a bitch poisoned it.
That is definitely a bull terrier. What a shame he had to be shot. It is possible that somehow he got overstimulated and started the biting.

Scan down to the "Attacks, maiming, and deaths" chart. Shows a marked difference between the two. Attacks causing bodily harm by pit bulls: 4,008, maiming by pit bulls: 2,567, and deaths by pit bulls: 328. The bull terrier: 3, 1, and 0 respectively. Yet, in the temperament category, it is the bull terrier who is called aggressive and protective with no such descriptors for the pit bull. It sounds like the bull terrier is the misunderstood sweetheart.
