Qantas flights direct from London to Perth – we reveal the hell of flying non-stop for 17 hours [tr]

I KNOW I shouldn’t think about it, I’ll scare myself to death but after seventeen hours in the air, I can’t get the worst case scenario out of my head.

No, not a plane crash. I am convinced that I am breathing more farts than air.

I’m on Qantas’ inaugural Perth to London flight, the longest to and from the UK, and the atmosphere in the pressurised tube I’ve been sharing with over 200 other bodies has gotten quite stale.

One of these days, technology will advance to the point that we will be able to breath fresh, sterile air, while riding in all our manspeading comfort inside of cylindrical shaped petri dishes to our destination of choice. Some day.......

One of these days, technology will advance to the point that we will have Star Trek type transporters. Problem solved.

I mean it took 38 posts for the first Airplane! reference.

This is not the FR of old.

I did it in Business class, I can’t imagine the hell of steerage.
About 15 years ago, my boss wanted me in Tokyo ASAP so I got stuck in "steerage" for 13 hours - middle seat, no less - and I'm claustrophobic. It really was hell.
A few weeks later I returned to the US in business class. It was so nice I almost didn't want to get off the plane.

I know...we're slipping. We need to pay attention to the philosophy of Leslie Nielsen and when we see the opportunity to post...

Anyone who doesn’t want to deal with airlines is welcome to travel to Perth by sea...

“We sailed from Seattle to Yokohama and back on MSTS ships.”

On the Gen. Edwin D. Patrick, I presume?

“The worst part of long flights is the stench of the gassy old people “

As opposed to the fine, light aroma of the youngers?

Thats the equivalent to having a “Urination Area” in a swimming pool.

The same in a restaurant before the laws were all encompassing. That was one of the first criteria for choosing where to go. I cant enjoy chomping down my IHop Fresh-n-Fruity pancakes, even though you have the smokers identified and semi-quarantined in that faux walled off area in the far corner of the building. Putting them all in the ass end of the plane next to the crappers only reminds me of the crews head on the USCGC Cherokee (WMEC-165). A gang of 5 toilets, no partitions, with salt water flush, SMOKING ALLOWED. A fine thing to walk into first thing in the morning. I grew up with chain smoking parents, aunts and uncles, and Granny D-21 chewed snuff and carried her own glass spittoon!

Fresh air ventilation and a little negative pressure delta would render a virtually continuous flow of fresh air that the plane in engulfed in, not to mention get rid of the bacterial and viral toxins that everyone carries along with them daily. No friggen clue why it hasnt been addressed.

I pray I never have to fly commercial again.

I had the opportunity of meeting a retired Navy Commander, who was a cruiser XO in WWII. Before the war, he made the Long Beach to Pearl Harbor run as a dependent five times on a ship like that.

I'm with you. Air travel isn't much fun anymore, but when time is important (like vacation time) I am flying every time.

I admit, if I could drive, I would do it...:) I love driving on vacation.

I went on a trip a couple of years ago to burn some vacation time, and it was simply a road trip to see America.

Turned up the music real loud, rolled down all the windows, and drove. The only time I didn't drive about 10 hours or more was when I went horseback riding (which I ended up not doing due to rain, but that was the only place I had a reservation)

I was by myself, did about 3500 miles and drove for five days...just went wherever I wanted with no itinerary. I was going from New England down to Virginia to spend a day horseback riding in the Shenandoah Mountains and then I was going to try to make it the Four Corners Monument, but in Louisville I realized I just could not make it time wise...so I went to Nebraska instead...:)

And while I’m not the only journalist on the flight, I am the only one who has been sat in economy for the nine thousand and one mile journey.

Do the English really speak this way: "has been sat"?

They should offer free knock out pills.
I flew 11 hours once, only way it was better than any other flight was the advanced compartment humidifier and lower altitude adjustment on the 787.

Two worst flights ... 1971 8 hours from Kingville Texas to San Diego Ca. in a C47. 1997(?) 8 hours on the tarmac at Logan (Boston) and another 8 hours on the tarmac at O’Hare no de-planning ... same day same flight.

Now stick an overcrowded Chinese airport and do it in hot weather. Pure delight particularly for an old geezer like me.

I’m not counting my flights in Vietnam during the war ... relatively short flights but very “exciting”
