Confederate Major General John B. Gordon’s troops launch an all-out assault on Fort Steadman in the Union lines surrounding Petersburg, VA. The predawn attack is initially successful. Fort Stedman and a couple of near battery emplacements are captured. But within a couple of hours, Army of the Potomac’s XI corp. counterattack Gordons forces and force them back to the Confederate lines. This is the last time that General Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia will attack their old advisory, the Army of the Potomac. Within 15 days, the Army of Northern Virginia will cease to exist.
As for A. Lincoln, you might want to stay away from the theater for a while.

By this point the Confederate Army was operating on spirit alone, little food, ammunition, ragged clothing in mid winter, massive desertions. God bless these Americans who stayed to the end. There is a beautiful statue of John B Gordon, later Governor of Georgia on the capitol grounds in Atlanta. Well deserved.
My great grandfather’s brother Fought in every major battle in Va/Md/PA from May 1862 to surrender (role)at Appomattox. He was wounded three times. One can only imagine the hell he saw.
Gordon was a fighter.

Victory in war has a quality of all of its own. Something Lee, Longstreet and the others of the Southern Army would never discover.
You need to read about Grant’s Western Campaign. Also Sherman’s supposed atrocities don’t stand up to historical scrutiny.
And I am not going to get into a “forever bandwidth wasting “ discussion on it. Where we count how many “Yanks & Rebs” can dance on the head o a pin!

Knowing what we know now, I wonder for what was the gain from the Civil War? I know slavery, slavery, slavery...Slavery never ended, it just changed definition. The roots of the post war Democrats are still very real. It is a shame that the words of the Gettysburg Address are all in vain. We are headed to another one with left vs right and free state vs the new slave states.
“war criminals” can only occur on the losing side.. The winners write the history books and conduct the trials.

While my sympathies are with the South, Grant did know how to run a war on a basic level Figure out what your advantages are, and run with them until you win and your enemies have all been sufficiently defeated. He and Lincoln made for a winning team, the like of which hasn’t really been seen since.
Grant is the worst general, except for most of the rest.
