By this point the Confederate Army was operating on spirit alone, little food, ammunition, ragged clothing in mid winter, massive desertions. God bless these Americans who stayed to the end. There is a beautiful statue of John B Gordon, later Governor of Georgia on the capitol grounds in Atlanta. Well deserved.

My great grandfather’s brother Fought in every major battle in Va/Md/PA from May 1862 to surrender (role)at Appomattox. He was wounded three times. One can only imagine the hell he saw.
