The warning comes weeks after the Defence Secretary, Gavin Williamson, said Russia had been spying on the UKs energy infrastructure and could cause thousands and thousands and thousands of deaths if it crippled the power supply.
America this week blamed the Russian government for a campaign of cyber attacks stretching back at least two years that targeted the US power grid.
Energy and security experts say a cyber attack is one of a number of so-called black sky hazards that have the potential to knock out power for days, weeks or even longer across large parts of a country, or even continent.
As well as a cyber attack, other black sky risks include extreme weather, an electromagnetic pulse caused by a nuclear detonation in the atmosphere and terrorist attacks on key substations or transformers.
One of the most destructive risks would be a powerful solar storm. A previous storm in 1859, now known as the Carrington Event, caused so much geomagnetic disruption that telegraph operators reported sparks bursting out of their machines. Such a storm today could cause havoc to electrical systems.
Lord Arbuthnot of Edrom, a former chair of the Commons defence committee who now advises the Electric Infrastructure Security Council, said modern life had complete reliance on electricity.

Or parts of New York after Sandy. Another good reason for me to tithe to the Salvation Army, which I do, since they provide for the "least of these", which could be any of us in a disaster, and they also preach the word of the Lord, which gives people hope, meaning they'd be less likely to riot, murder, etc., IMO.
Kookyfornia has actually recommended that its residents have a TWO-WEEK supply of food, water and so on, in preparation for large earthquakes. Of course, life is so expensive over there that their recommendation may end up going largely unheeded; most people simply won’t have the money to do that.
Oh, and FEMA, Red Cross? BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA! Even the corporate scum do better than these folks in helping out people who need it, IMO.
Actually , it is a little of both; an outbuilding which shaded and protected an underground aquifer.
Basically, its a shed over an underground spring.
The early settlers used the uprising water spring as a refrigerator to keep food longer, and chilled bottled liquids
since it ran cooler than surface water, and kept a constant temperature since the source is subterranean.
The amount of water flowage was irrelevant, what mattered is its' consistency as a year round drinking water source, and temperature control.
Similar to a root cellar for consistent temperature, except that a root cellar is dry food storage.
Agreed.
Dont know if Putin is evil.
Just brutal and has no problem taking a life if it’s an opponent.
Which is WRONG.
But evil should be left to those like hillary, who would detroy many women’s lives to let her husband keep power.
And would kill us deplorables given the chance.
Yup, got a bunch of those too for comparable reasons: yard-decorative niceties that can be repurposed for candle-like indoor lighting in a pinch. Good point on bartering. Can usually buy smaller ones under $1 during fall clearance.
Problem is their batteries don’t last past two years (if one even).
Yeah, I noticed that about the batteries. Too bad - I think the ones I got are guaranteed for 3 years. I’ve got plenty of candles stocked up too. :)
