The woman who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting her boyfriend during what she said was a video stunt gone wrong has been sentenced in Norman County to 180 days in jail.
Monalisa Perez pleaded guilty in December to manslaughter in connection to the fatal shooting of her boyfriend, Pedro Ruiz III, in Halstad last June. She'll serve an additional 10 years of probation.
A judge granted her request to serve the sentence in increments of 10 days at a jail in South Dakota, where she now lives, ABC affiliate WDAY reported.
According to the criminal complaint, Perez told authorities Ruiz wanted to make a YouTube video of her shooting a bullet into a book he was holding against his chest. She said she fired from about a foot away.
Perez also told authorities Ruiz showed her a different book he had shot, and the bullet did not go all the way through.
Norman County Attorney James Brue told WDAY he had to balance the need to hold Perez accountable with the fact that the "foolish stunt" was concocted by Ruiz.
The incident was captured on two cameras. Police said the firearm used matched the .50 caliber Desert Eagle located on the scene.
Authorities said Ruiz died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
WDAY reported Ruiz's family members were at the sentencing, and that several said they were unhappy with what they deemed a short sentence for Perez.
I just hope they didn’t reproduce.
Yeah I do. Still stunned at what an incredibly stupid act it was. Seems young people will do almost anything to be popular on an internet video. There are thousands of videos out there of idiots doing foolish things.
Almost like the judge thought these two idiots were improving the gene pool.

~300 grains @ 1400 FPS. Probably went through the book, the dude and all the drywall in it’s path.
Seriously stupid.
Like someone posted the other day about another brilliant stunt.
In the 50s, Beat Poet William Burroughs went to shoot an apple off his wifes head in a Mexico City hotel room while both were drunk. She bounced up. He holed her brain. He got off by his familys wealth.
You can’t fix stupid. But sometimes stupid fixes itself.
I used to have a .50AE Desert Eagle. It would easily plow through a couple city phone books at 10 yards.

Go big or go home.
Say.......Hold Muh Beer........
.50 caliber? I’d rather be hit by a car!
I do and I tend to believe her. Unless there was some newly-purchased life insurance policy, there’s no motive for her to kill the man.
20-year-old mother of two = clearly not a great decision-maker. I would have fined her the court costs, sit in the pokey for a week and consider it done.

Not that I’d want to take the risk even if I felt I’d matched the conditions of the test shot almost perfectly, but what do you suppose went wrong?
Could it be that the paper in the second book was less dense? Also does the penetrating power of one shot versus another vary significantly (maybe because of the gunpowder or the way the bullet goes down the barrel)?
My guess is that it was the density of the paper, but anyone have any other ideas?
You’d think they would’ve experimented with a watermelon behind the book first...or a milk jug full of water, or the family cat..before doing it real-time.
She is beyond stupid or she really did want to kill him, perhaps he just dumped her.

My thought was first book sat on something and shot so it could get blown back taking up part of the energy .
where he had it against chest bullet went deeper
Hadn’t thought of that. Yeah, I suppose that could affect it.
Yup, mens lives mean nothing.
