The A-list actress' recent stumbles with 'Red Sparrow,' 'mother!' and 'Passengers' are no reason to gloat. The death of the movie star is bad news for everyone in Hollywood.
In 1993, John Travoltas career was teetering on the brink. The actor, whod become a superstar with Saturday Night Fever and then added to his luster with Grease, had all but ceased to matter as a cultural force. True, he could still deliver the occasional hit, such as Look Whos Talking, but at the domestic and foreign box office he was a has-been, someone largely remembered for a white sharkskin suit and a few fabulous dance moves.
Hollywood had effectively written him off, perhaps unconvinced he was all that big a star to begin with. But one director, who was just beginning to make his name, had faith, and when he came to make his second feature, he chose Travolta for the most important role. That director, of course, was Quentin Tarantino; the feature was 1994s Pulp Fiction; and with it, Travolta was back on top, raking in $20 million per movie and sealing his place in the pantheon.
It isnt easy being a star, as Jennifer Lawrence must have thought when Red Sparrow opened to a humble $16.9 million first weekend earlier this month. Youre on a perpetual roller-coaster ride, knowing each time youre up, the law of gravity says youre going to crash back down. Stars live in constant fear that everything they have, theyll soon lose the perks, the privileges, the private planes. Directors secretly resent their clout, executives question their monetary value and pundits (like me) wonder whether many deserve to be called stars at all.

Hmmm. I guess if you give Harvey what he wants he really can get you that Oscar. Seth MacFarland was right.
So she may be be, at even her young age, headed down.
I can’t help myself.... whatever flaws and weaknesses she may have as a human being, Jennifer Lawrence never fails to make my brain dissolve, my thighs sweat, and my eyes water.
last movie i went to was “Trouble with the curve” after Clint Eastwood had the conversation with the empty chair Obama
It’s pretty much established conventional wisdom that John Travolta got where he is by gargling knobs.
Why have any interest in JL when photos of her butt hole are all over the internet?
The mystery is pretty much gone after I’ve seen a chicks’ brown starfish.
Lol!!! I told everybody I have a brain injury! :-)
Lol I meant Robert. Sorry
Jennifer is naked in front of a dozen+ people and leans against a table and spreads her legs. The view is below is cut off by some guy. She is an actress you know.
Take a look at the cast of Red Sparrow. All the other women are old and haggard. If Lawrence cant shine against Charlotte Rampling shes doomed.
I know I’m an outlier on this site when it comes to this opinion, but I could give 2 shits about an actors politics. Don’t care. I just want to see a good movie.
Tom Cruise is a batshit crazy Scientologist. Don’t care. I like his Mission Impossible movies, Risky Business, The Firm, Top Gun, Edge of Tomorrow, Collateral, The Last Samurai, etc. I’ll eat popcorn and watch these and other flicks for an escape.
Tom Hanks is a lefty. Don’t care. Loved Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, A league of Their Own, etc.
Harrison Ford? Might be a lefty. Probably is. Don’t care. Too many great movies to list.
And Jennifer Lawrence? Definite ignorant lefty. But she was great in Silver Linings Playbook, great in American Hustle, ok in some X-men movies, etc. Her being an absolute dufus has no bearing on my life.
I feel the same way about music. Crazy lefty douchebags can make great music. In no way would that ever persuade me to pull the lever for a Democrat under any circumstances. But I know a good tune when I hear it.
I detected that also. We're supposedly in a "golden age" of television, but I find that many of these shows are just pushing the same liberal agenda as the silver screen. Also, the narratives seem to fall apart. They get off to a good start, then deteriorate -- too many holes, lack of consistency or reality.
My favorite is some drug commercial with a fictional retired female fire fighter who looks like she weighs 90 pounds soaking wet. So much feminist propaganda out there.
To take two more recent examples, Eddie Murphy and Tom Cruise were once sure fire box office. Even junk like “The Golden Child” would draw an audience.
Not really. Most of the folks we think of as being draws really are just good at picking hits. Golden Child just barely broke even, and when compared to Beverly Hills Cops $234 million haul Golden Child’s $79 was basically a flop. What you see in that $79 million was probably Eddie’s “true” audience, the other $150 million for BHC is the folks who show up for the story.
Eddie’s problem is he’s a shtick guy. He has this Eddie Murphy thing he does in all his movies. Even in the Nutty Professor series he just plays multiple Eddie Murphys. And it’s funny, you can always count on a few solid belly laughs, but there’s really not much reason to watch the next movie, you’ve already seen all the funny parts in his previous work.
Well they showed up for the high concept. Thats what they were selling in the 80s. But Murphy was the draw. Michael Caine in Beverly Hills Cop or The Golden Child wouldnt have drawn a crowd.
Observe those who are appalled by the boobs comment. That is a classic.
The woman on the far left....”OMG” Bwahahahaha.
