A Wrinkle in Time Review: Disney's Latest Is a Colossal Disappointment
MovieWeb ^ | March 7, 2018 | Julian Roman

Ava DuVernay's adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time is a colossal disappointment. The classic science fiction novel by Madeleine L'Engle has been turned into a sappy melodrama; utterly devoid of mystery or wonder. DuVernay's approach to the story is to emphasize its outcast element. The result is a fire hose of gushing positive reinforcement for the bullied, angst ridden protagonist. It reminded me of Al Franken's famous SNL skit, "Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley"; where he sits in front of a mirror saying, "You're good enough, you're smart enough, and doggone it, people like me". A Wrinkle in Time is essentially two hours of that, with Oprah Winfrey and special effects.

They do that every week on SNL and even manage to fit in a musical number.

I saw the trailers and would not even think of bothering with it.

The problem with the movie industry is that they take a perfectly good book and ruin it.

I can only think of one movie that follows the book almost exactly, down to the dialog and that is an OLD Disney make of Incredible Journey that I have.

And it’s good.

There’s simply no need to change the story line of a good book. That’s what made it so good in the first place.

I'd lose a fortune, but if I had the money, I'd make children's fairy tales the way many were originally written, to scare the crap out of kids, for their own good.

Hansel and Gretyl were warned by their parents not to wander into the forest. They did anyway, were captured by a witch and almost cooked and eaten. Why tell the kids a story like that? Because forests really are dangerous to wander around in. Its ok to use a story to warn them the world is not always safe.

Pinnochio was given money by his father to go to school. He was convinced by criminals to skip school and sent to an island to be a slave. Lesson? Go to school!

Today kid's movies are deluding kids pumping them with unearned self esteem and pre-programmed neurosis.

I’ll be honest. I am not going to watch anything that has Oprah in it.

Bingo ! Once I saw "The Oprah" in the trailer I told the family we won't be going to see that.

Could not agree more! This is exactly how I felt when I saw what they did with Atlas Shrugged.

What does “SJW” mean?

It means "Social Justice Warrior." It is a term used to refer to people who want to up heave all existing society to cater to their crackpot ideas about feminism, homosexuality, race, the underclass, and so forth.

Everything Hollywood does is according to Marxist ideology, not telling a story. All they can peddle is sex and special effects.

I thought in the case of John Carter....the book simply told a great story, and it just marginally works if you lay out the story in film. I can think of several books which made lousy movies.

I’ve heard that some studio is reviewing John Carter and wants to remake the movie but in some other fashion. I kinda doubt that anyone will invest into the project.

Hansel and Gretyl were warned by their parents not to wander into the forest.

What PC version of the story did you hear?

Hansel and Gretel are taken into the forest by their parents and abandon.

I guess I am more of a true male than I, a math nerd in my youth, used to think:

I have never, ever understood the female fascination with George Clooney. He seems to me to be a wooden doofus with average features.

No offense meant, really. Just voicing my perplexity.

Disney started the deliberate decline into degeneracy after Walt died: Michael Eisner.

Just another slippery slope; people don’t notice till it’s too late.

The 1962 movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” also follows the book very closely.
