President Trump on Tuesday signaled an openness to modest gun-control measures following what he called an “evil massacre” at a South Florida high school last week that left 17 dead and prompted passionate calls from teenagers for reform.
Trump directed the Justice Department to draft a ban on devices known as “bump stocks,” molded pieces of plastic or metal that can attach to a legal semiautomatic gun and allow it to fire up to 100 rounds in seven seconds, similar to an illegal machine gun.
In private, he has indicated that he might do more, telling advisers and friends in recent days that he is determined to push for some sort of gun-control legislation, according to people familiar with the conversations.
In one such discussion, during dinner with television commentator Geraldo Rivera at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, the president listened with interest as Rivera suggested raising the minimum age at which a person could buy a semiautomatic weapon from 18 to 21. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday that the idea is “on the table for us to discuss.”
So far, Trump’s public stances have not crossed the agenda of the powerful pro-gun-rights National Rifle Association, which endorsed him during the 2016 Republican primary and spent more than $30 million supporting his candidacy and attacking his opponent in the general election, Hillary Clinton. But behind the scenes, Trump is floating ideas that could put him at odds with the NRA.
The NRA did not respond Tuesday to a request for comment.
Trump’s attempt at a new tone on the gun issue comes as the politics surrounding the issue appear to be changing in the wake of the shooting last week in Parkland, Fla.

Here's how it works:
1. Federal agency wants more power.
2. Federal agency fails to exercise its existing power to prevent evil, and evil happens.
3. Federal agency, and its cronies, demand more power to prevent evil from happening again.
4. People are swayed to the federal agency's argument, and give said agency more power.
5. Federal agency is still hungry for power, go back to step #1.
The people truly in charge of this country, i.e. the media and academic and non-political government elites, and the now fully socialist Democrat Party, want to eliminate conservatives and practicing Christians in particular, using any means necessary--hopefully soft means but if push comes to shove, well, they are angry.
There are two motivations for this: 1) to gain the support of people around the globe who are poorer than us and envy us (i.e., the vast majority of humanity), which support will help them establish a popular global government, and 2) the radical atheistic spirit that has been manifest in humanity in various forms since the dawn of time. They are genocidal in their ideology, and also in their practice (abortion, euthanasia, etc.)
All military service, whether at 18 or 40 is voluntary unless there is a draft.
But 18 year olds are required to register for selective service so they can be drafted in time of war and are part of the unorganized militia per federal law.
The second amendment isn’t about hunting. It’s about an individual fundamental right to bear arms. So hunting is rather irrelevant. But you asked what the “need” was for a semi-automatic weapon. I pointed out that they are commonly used for hunting.
For many teens the first firearm that you learn to shoot with is a semi-automatic .22.
It’s pretty obvious from your posting that you are a woman and have some involvement with the school system. It’s also pretty obvious to me that you have very little understanding of firearms and the 2nd Amendment.
Teens used to routinely carry weapons to school in years past for lawful purposes. Many schools had rifle teams. The guns can’t do anything without human control.
I’m not sure why you think raising the age to 21 to buy a semi automatic rifle will have any effect on school shootings. Most school shootings involved students who were younger than 18 who didn’t go to a dealer and buy the weapons they used. They either stole them or otherwise acquired them, Usually violating existing laws when doing so.
The fact is, if you look beyond your female emotions for a minute, that the semiautomatic rifle cannot do anything without a human hand to guide it. The shooter in Florida broken dozens of laws doing what he did. The law cannot magically fix a problem with human nature, which is debased by public schools and teachers to begin with.
I think I see the flaw in your logic.

I'm going to be writing a vanity post on this tomorrow. I love and support our President but that support is not unconditional. What has taken place with this announcement is an outrage that should concern every American. More to come from me on this subject tomorrow.

How about repealing all federal gun control laws, since they have worked sooooo well in preventing this kind of crap.
Let each state determine how to stop the actual crazies without rendering the sane people defenseless.
I think it's bull excrement. There should be one age of majority. Buy a house, vote, sign up for the military, drink alcohol, smoke, buy a firearm, one age. If 18 is old enough to be drafted in wartime, then 18 is old enough to be a complete adult with all rights and all responsibilities.
It’s the skrewel systems that put boys onto these drugs, to keep them pacified. Obviously not working in some cases.
I personally think that the voting age should be raised to 25, which is the average age at which the human brain is finally fully developed. There probably should also be a maximum voting age, say around 80. Half of people aged 85 suffer from some sort of dementia.
As for purchasing a semi-auto, having a drink on your own or getting married, 16 sounds good to me.
In 1976 there were plenty of semi-automatic weapons in the hands of kids and we didn’t have them going into schools and shooting other kids. Your argument is weak.

I’m just trying to explore your thinking, I didn’t mean to hit a nerve.
From your words and various posts I take it that you are not a “Shall not be infringed” kind of person. So what’s your thinking? I doubt your thinking is that “the right of the people” does not apply to those under a certain age because they are not people. Yet you think that “the right of the people” does not apply to those people. Why?
Do you think that “The right of the people to keep and bear arms” has boundaries like “the right of the people to vote” and that laws regarding things outside those boundaries are not infringements? If so, what, where and why are those boundaries?
The boundaries on “the right of the people to vote” are clear, at least some of them. One has to be a resident of the district in which a public vote takes place. One has to be a member of the organization in which a private vote takes place. And it seems to me the reasons for those boundaries are self evident.
