Drinking alcohol more important than exercise for living past 90, study says
Chi Chron ^ | Joe Dziemianowicz

Researchers discovered that subjects who drank about two glasses of beer or wine a day were 18 percent less likely to experience a premature death, the Independent reports.

Meanwhile, participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day, cut the same risk by 11 percent.

“I have no explanation for it, but I do firmly believe that modest drinking improves longevity,” Kawas stated over the weekend at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual conference in Austin, Texas.

Other factors were found to boost longevity, including weight. Participants who were slightly overweight — but not obese — cut their odds of an early death by 3 percent.

I remember my mom telling a story about her childhood. It seems the kids found their dad’s medicinal whiskey. They got drunk. One of her brothers told the rest. “stop this house. I want to get off.”

If there’s a correlation with being moderate in food, emotions and life in general then it would make sense.

Yours is the most likely explanation... If there are any likely explantions... However other factors could easlily influence the results. I actually believe that few if any meaningful conclusions can reliably be drawn from this particular study. It looks like just another waste of taxpayer dollars to me.

In this case the people enrolled in the study were all over 80 in 2003. Many people who have been “moderate” drinkers do not survive into their 80s and the ones who do may have genetic makeup that give them a stronger propensity for a longer life span. In other words those who were moderate drinkers with more vulnerable genetic dispositions likely weeded themselves out before being eligible to be in the study. Conversely, the good habits of those who exercised my have caused them to exceed the normal limitations of their genetic makeup.

My wife can't keep hers on when she drinks - which is why I married her.

Cheers hunny. Bottoms up!

We all get sick and having an energy reserve for our body to call on improves our chance of recovery without doing harm to the rest of the body.

I've seen this in cancer/chemo patients. Thin slim ones don't have the reserves for the weight loss associated with the treatments.

Yes.

Personally I abhor simple explanations for complicated outcomes. There's no way to really know such things because you can't really do a multi thousand person study controlling for every variable except for alcohol consumption, starting at birth and lasting for 80-100 years.

My dad drank a shot or two of Southern Comfort daily and lived to 94. Southern Comfort is vile sweet stuff but for me it tasted great on any kind of ice cream. Pour one shot over it.

My grandma lived to 106 with no significant health issues, and when she was in her 90s she complained that none of the men in the assisted living facility wanted to dance with her.

Her secret—never worked a day in her life and always had a smile on her face.

Her other secret—she was a conspiracy theorist who didn’t believe anything the government said. She was convinced that man never landed on the moon. If you disagreed she would just say: “If you want to believe those liars its ok with me.”

:-)
