An Indian friend of mine recently married an Indian girl. At the wedding, virtually everyone from India was strongly fluent in English. Plus they played a video of friends and family from her hometown sharing their congratulations. Only one required translation.

She came to the US for the first time ever a week prior to the wedding. Her English is stellar.

Might have a lot to do with all the outsourcing companies do to those areas. A previous employer of mine had all the transactional accounting performed in Mumbai and Pune. They had to speak English in order to communicated with our clients. However, they speaks the Queen’s English which Created some issues because the phrasing is very different from American English.

India is de-balkanizing while the US is splintering into 10000 balkanized islands.

Oh, c’mon, the Leftard “multiculturalists” tell us that English is evillll and everyone should be as Balkanized as possible in separate language and cultural cul-de-sacs.

Anyway, isn’t this just another form of “cultural appropriation” and by what right do these “untouchables” think they should be allowed to speak English and advance their opportunities in life???

Few if any ever consider the parallels between the United States experience and the Indian one. Both were colonies until it became unbearable. The Great Revolt of 1855 represented a great burst within the country which expressed the oppression they felt under the English. I guess, that’s the point. We both felt the English oppression intolerable.

Modern times: If an Indian untouchable can save up rupees, learn English, groom properly, get an education and join the world economy, I’m all for it!

In this video, the two men are eventually are forced to speak “English” at 1:45 in by their very serious and proud “English” instructor. I found it quite funny...especially since I’m aware, second-hand, on how some Indians do use English and English phases in their own unique way.

It sounds amazingly modern - people marrying for love, ignoring class backgrounds, and starting their own supercaste - that of free people who don't look to class backgrounds, just personal character and talent and hardworkingness as the measure of virtue.

Somewhat related, I came across this article the other day:

This Man Rode a Bike From India to Sweden—for Love
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/04/pk-mahanandia-cycle-india-sweden-love-untouchable

The man in the story is an "untouchable".

Interesting from the article:

“With this going on now in India, it’s little wonder that India is now so friendly to President Trump, whose political philosophy recognizes this phenomena much more than the ‘diversity is strength’ mantra.”

I still hate getting offshore customer service or help desk but it’s not as infuriatingly incomprehensible as it was even a few years ago. I don’t doubt that Indians are speaking proper English but their cadence is unusual and their sentences are far too elaborate. It’s not unusual for it to all collapse into sounding like gibberish if you’re not paying close attention. That said, they’re far better than Chinese, with whom I still have to repeat myself in paraphrase multiple times to make sure they get it, then ask them to please confirm their understanding, i.e. repeat back to me what they think I’ve just asked or said.
