We can tell illegals till the cows come home that learning English is the real path to assimilation and upward mobility and all we hear is that diversity is "strength" or maybe that we have yanqui imperialista racist prejudices.
But over in India, we are seeing that idea coming to life.
Quartz has a long and utterly fascinating piece by Sajith Pai, titled "India has a new caste for native English speakers only,' describing how English is not only a great skill to have in the global economy, and a path upward in a big striving country such as India, something we all recognize here, too, it's positively trashing India's dreadful caste system and creating a new class of people who speak almost exclusively English, by choice. Pai writes:
Unlike Anglo-Indians, the original English-speaking community in India, who were Christians, Indo-Anglians comprise all religions, though Hindus dominate. Indo-Anglians are also a highly urban lot; concentrated in the top seven large cities of India (Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Kolkata) with a smattering across the smaller towns in the hills and in Goa.
Within these cities, they are clustered in certain pockets: Gurgaon, and parts of south Delhi, south Bombay and Western Suburbs from Bandra to Andheri, Indiranagar, Koramangala and gated communities in Bangalore’s outer ring road—Sarjapur, Koregaon Park—Kalyaninagar, Gachibowli and HiTech City etc. They fall well within the top 1% of India economically and have a consumption basket that is comparable to their middle-class counterparts abroad. Their kids go to International schools and have ‘first-world yoga names’ such as Aryan, Kabir, Kyra, Shanaya, Tia etc 2.

And that’s how you catch scammers. Their version of English gives them away in the spam emails.
Ayup!
Si’. Viva Grande.
Interesting considering the modern school system and the English language was brought to them in the 1830s.
The Indians that I know do not have revolting accents nor pronunciation. I am actually highly impressed with their linguistic skills. English and Hindi are their main languages, yet all of them speak multiple languages, some upwards of 5. Maybe I’m biased because I formed personal relationships and consider them friends.
Now, the more uneducated do butcher English. While I was in Mumbai, my driver understood my American English with my Texas drawl. It took much more for me to understand his heavily accented English.
Exactly! Not only scammers. I found in an AT&T Chat sessions I was chatting with “Steve” but based on his responses, I knew I had someone in India. Or as he revealed, Southeast Asia.
I shouldn’t pick on Indians solely. There are call centers all over the world which annoy me by not understanding what I am asking.
That's a message that some of our own tribesmen should take to heart.
“This is Peggy...”
As an English, english speaker, I would like to have your assurance that ‘Americans’ don’t butcher the English language on a daily basis!

“#2: “Learn English, live large.”
That’s a message that some of our own tribesmen should take to heart.”
Tru dat
We don’t butcher English, we speak American.
Hey! We stole your English language fair and square. ;-)
You’re right. The “rebellion” was started by a few would-be terrorists whon spread the rumor that the soldiers’ cartridges - which the had to bite before loading - were smeared in pig fat. False, of course, but moslems have a shorter fuse than cannon.
In this video, the two men are eventually are forced to speak “English” at 1:45 in by their very serious and proud “English” instructor. I found it quite funny...especially since I’m aware, second-hand, on how some Indians do use English and English phases in their own unique way.

Somewhat related, I came across this article the other day:
This Man Rode a Bike From India to Swedenfor Love
https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/04/pk-mahanandia-cycle-india-sweden-love-untouchable
The man in the story is an "untouchable".
Interesting from the article:
“With this going on now in India, it’s little wonder that India is now so friendly to President Trump, whose political philosophy recognizes this phenomena much more than the ‘diversity is strength’ mantra.”
Have you heard what's going on in the US recently? Especially among kids?
How perfect is your English that you get to throw stones, anyway?
“An Indian friend of mine recently married an Indian girl. At the wedding, virtually everyone from India was strongly fluent in English. “
A close friend of mine recently went there, and virtually everyone he came in contact with could speak English. Most of those, in fact, are very good at English, but their accent couple with the British version, coupled with the ability to speak it fast, still makes it tough for Americans.
India has a very long way to go, but having English as an official language there is certainly helping them.
I still hate getting offshore customer service or help desk but it’s not as infuriatingly incomprehensible as it was even a few years ago. I don’t doubt that Indians are speaking proper English but their cadence is unusual and their sentences are far too elaborate. It’s not unusual for it to all collapse into sounding like gibberish if you’re not paying close attention. That said, they’re far better than Chinese, with whom I still have to repeat myself in paraphrase multiple times to make sure they get it, then ask them to please confirm their understanding, i.e. repeat back to me what they think I’ve just asked or said.
