Five major psychiatric diseases have overlapping patterns of genetic activity, new study shows

Many studies have identified variations in the genetic code that seem to be more common in people with psychiatric disorders. This approach goes a step further to show how genes are more or less active in the brains of people with various conditions. The study confirmed that genetic variations contributed to the patterns of activity in the brains, but as the authors wrote, “there is undoubtedly a contribution from environmental effects.”

Psychiatric disorders have some overlapping symptoms, making them difficult to diagnose. The molecular signatures in the new study suggested that schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism have dysfunctional synapses, the points of contact between neurons where they exchange information. Brain support cells called microglia and astroglia had unusual patterns of activity in some of the disorders as well.

Geschwind credits not only technological advances for the breakthrough, but an extraordinary level of international collaboration made possible by the National Institutes of Health's PsyEncode consortium, which encourages the sharing of information. The drop in cost of sequencing genetic code has also helped

five distinct psychiatric disorders — autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and alcoholism

Those appear to be all the "big ones", in my opinion.

Beyond that, psychological problems are mostly variants of neurotic behavior which is just "thinking incorrectly" and you can train people out of that.

A surprising number of psychiatric disorders can be diagnosed simply by ascertaining a patient’s political party affiliation.

It does. So a breakthrough in treating one could be important for all of them.

IMHO

The major psychiatric diseases have strong genetic interlinks with substance abuse and disorders of pain such as migraine and “fibromyalgia” (whatever that is...)

I would rank narcissistic personality disorder as a big one as well.

My feeling is that NPD has no genetic component.

Not in the Washington Post.

Good reading. I saw her listed as the writer and wondered when someone would post that reality.

schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and autism

Two of these three, schizo and bipolar, have been linked to pot use. And studies show the same area of the brain is damaged in both conditions.

Autism though is mostly a childhood disease. Or at least, I don't hear of adults developing autism.

I wonder if pot use before or during pregancy is influencing the autism rate.

I wonder why liberalism, progressive commie disorder, Marxism, and socialism weren't listed as top mental disorders? Could it be the people studying this suffer from all of them? They can all be summed up in one word really; leftism.

Not that I'm an expert on the subject but it seems distinctly possible that there's a lot more to genetics than eye color and hair color.

It may also be that people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorders attempt to self-medicate. Same with people who suffer from chronic depression or anxiety disorders often attempt to self-medicate with alcohol and other drugs.

Not that I’ve ever read. But some parents have found, perhaps anecdotally that medical marijuana can be helpful for mitigating the aggression and tendency for self-harm in kids with severe Autism. But researchers are looking into it.

Yes, you can. Gender identity disorder is being linked to hypoandrogensism in utero, or excessive free floating adrenal androgens during puberty. Non classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia and P.C.O.S. can also contribute to feelings of gender dysphoria. If the endocrin system doesn’t work properly, it can mess a kid up badly. I know; it is happening to my daughter. No laughing matter.

A lot of people diagnosed with fibro actually have systemic candida instead. Usually food allergies people aren’t aware of that makes them sick. Chronic fatigue, migraines, swollen joints, vomiting, digestive problems, all at the Same time. Sucks!!
