(GUATEMALA CITY) Researchers using a high-tech aerial mapping technique have found tens of thousands of previously undetected Mayan houses, buildings, defense works and pyramids in the dense jungle of Guatemalas Peten region, suggesting that millions more people lived there than previously thought.
The discoveries, which included industrial-sized agricultural fields and irrigation canals, were announced Thursday by an alliance of U.S., European and Guatemalan archaeologists working with Guatemalas Mayan Heritage and Nature Foundation.
The study estimates that roughly 10 million people may have....

Question for the learned scholars of FR - why would a population of 10 million need 'extensive defensive fences" "ramparts" and "citidels"? Who were they wanting to defend themselves from?

There are un-excavated ruins all over Central America. You can climb to the top of excavated ruins/temples, look over the rain forest, and see areas where the vegetation suggests there is something underneath.
