#16. Re “How many more “lost” cities are there”?

We don’t know. We lost track of them.

PS: I did a little “Outer Area” recon looking for house mounds of the workers who supposed Tikal (out up to 20 klicks from the central area between Temples I and II. (Un. of Penn. Outer Area Project, 1966. Got hit by dysentery and Trench foot infection which knocked me out of the game).

We found a very small temple, probably no more than 20 feet squared along the old prospector’s trail.

I also found a quartz/Chalcedny ceremonial dagger (about 50 facets or more, just lying on one of the house mounds.

Therefore you can expect to have more major finds of cities of varying sizes covering hundreds of years.

Now, here is what’s scary and exciting. We had to climb a hill that might have been a quarter mile high while doing our measurements along the old oil prospectors tail. One of my colleagues suggested, half jokingly and half seriously, that what we just climbed might be a gigantic pyramid itself.

Never knew if it was true or not, but if was, it might be one of the largest pyramids in the world.

I’d love to go back and do some digging there but I’m too old and damaged to make the hike, but the view from Temple IV of the Peten was awesome (at a high of over 400 feet above the jungle floor).

The Mayans were great builders. Got to give them that.

How far back in time do you wish to go? As many lost cities as that. There used to be sub-Saharian African cities prior to the arrival of the Portuguese which were made entirely with wood, including the sewers and water pipes to each dwelling (as reported by the Europeans). However gaining firearms, the wars began and soon the populations were variously dead, enslaved, or hiding. The cities rotted back into the jungle, but if you knew were to look I’m sure you could find traces still.

Or how about the cities reported underwater off the coasts of India - they go back perhaps 10,000 years.
