California city to experiment with 'universal basic income'

Residents to get $500 a month, no questions asked, as starting point

The mayor of Stockton, California, is leading an experiment with “universal basic income,” which is set to start by giving low-income residents $500 a month, no questions asked.

Mayor Michael Tubbs calls his city “ground zero” for issues like wage stagnation, rising housing prices and loss of middle-class jobs that affect the nation.

The Central Valley city went bankrupt in 2012, and for decades it has been trying to diversify its agriculture-based economy.

“I feel that as mayor it’s my responsibility to do all I could to begin figuring out what’s the best way to make sure that folks in our community have a real economic floor,” Tubbs said.

I have a stagnant wage and rising housing costs.

Would I be eligible for such a taxpayer handout to fork over to my landlord?

Or would I be SOL because I’m the wrong skin color, speak English, earn more than minimum wage, and don’t vote Democrat?

Safer to sell recreational “medical” pot or liquor than sugary sodas in California.

Does this mayor print his own currency?

Guess so! His state higher ups tried it back in 2009.

How many of the people there wire HOME $500 or more to Mexico every month?

25% will use the money productively. Some will save by using it to supplement their incomes by stocking groceries on sale in bulk, paying their bills on time and avoiding late fees, providing for their kids, and saving a little for an emergency fund.

50% will squander it immediately on junk because of a pent up desire to buy without having to count the cost.

The remainder will wind up giving it to the local ABC stores, weed and other intoxicants.

With Welfare, Medicaid, and subsidized low income housing, it pretty much already exists.

Yup. I live in Washington and when California legalized drugs, I was pleased. Please give them more perks

No use commenting about this. They are going to do what they want to do regardless. The end goal is to redistribute money so as to achieve “equality.”
$500 is for now. If this were implemented, it would not be 500. Guess whether it would be more or less.

The moment you give everyone $1,000 a month, 1,000 becomes equal to nearly zero. The recipients whine and moan, and demand 2,000, which soon becomes nearly equal to zero, leading the parasites to want 4,000, which has them demanding...... (repeat until doomsday).

But the thing that proves these people are complete a$$sholes, is that they are testing the “universal basic income” on a limited number of people. For the slow-witted, “universal” and “limited number” are opposites. So they are not testing anything “universal,” but instead something on a limited scale. So they are not testing the “universal basic income.” It’s crystal clear to me.
Obviously, the test with a limited number will be declared a success. Those who receive it will sing its praises; the media will carry stories about single mothers now being able to afford baby formula and diapers. Homeless people will now be able to afford to buy better blankets, and a new shopping cart. There will be no negatives. The impact on those who don’t receive it will be minimal. It will hardly affect taxes at all. Obviously none of it is going to the elderly, so don’t even think of including them in this.

When it is finally implemented, the number will be higher, and it will impact everyone foolish enough to work at a job.
The people proposing this are insane a$$holes.

I think they will have to raise that amount to at least $1500 a month. But why stop there, why don’t they give them $5,000 a month? What the hell, it’s not like the city didn’t just go bankrupt 5 years ago.

I’m thinking the city fathers have found out how to actually locate the pot of gold that is at the end of a rainbow. Also, because of the high energy potential found in unicorn gas, they will be packaging and selling unicorn farts to NASA.

It can be proved mathematically that redistributionism when compared to no redistributionism causes:
-less increase in total aggregate wealth
-higher average price level
-decreased average real wage rate (and lower standard of living for the average wage earner)
-increased degree of exploitation (aggregate profit/aggregate wages)
-increased degree of inequality (aggregate demand for labor/aggregate demand for consumer goods)

And here we have today’s classic example of the insanity brought on by the mental disease known as liberalism. As long as they destroy themselves, it couldn’t happen to a better bunch. When it endangers the rest of us, action needs to be taken.
