Many observers have warned that Putins military campaign in Syria may backfire at home. Russias 144 million people include about 20 million Muslims; the overwhelming majority are Sunnis. Some analysts believe that these Russian Sunnis will recoil from Russias support for Assads Alawite-dominated regime and its attacks on Sunni rebels, and from Russias effort to lead a coalition of Shiite powers, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
If pundits predictions were true, Muslims would be more likely to choose the anti-war response and less likely to support Putins intervention. But thats not exactly what we found.
...There wasnt a consensus among any religious group. Russian Muslims are split regarding the intervention in Syria, but more are pro- than anti-war. In addition, about 20 percent of the sample (both religions) said that they were unsure of their opinion.
Russian Muslims and Orthodox Christians did split on the idea of joining a Western alliance to stop the Syrian civil war. Many fewer Tatar Muslims (18 percent) and Dagestani Muslims (11 percent) wanted to join a Western alliance, while 28 percent of the Orthodox Christians in Tatarstan did so.

Confucius once say “fuqum”
Wapo....Just gotta be about Russia....every day....day after day...
Russia’s government would not hesitate to take any and all Muslim “seethers” out.
Well they’ve made up big chunk of Russia for centuries and currently out-birth native Russians, who are facing a major demographic crisis due to catastrophically low birthrates. Russian Muslims also don’t suffer from the alcoholism that’s contributed to the high male mortality rate in the country for years. (It’s changing now, but for awhile 1/4 of Russian men did not live to see age 60.)
Can't fight the seether.
I was deployed to Uzbekistan where the Muslims liked their vodka & not a hijab in sight. That was after 70 years of secularization, of course.
Wonder what the secular-to-jihadi ratio is among Muslims in Russia now?
do we really care?
I’m close with several Uzbeks (including Uzbek Jews!) And honestly, just as in the Middle East (yes even the Middle East, I mean just look at the protests in Iran) - of course not everyone is a Sharia law abiding extremist.
But major terror suspects in the U.S. hailed from the Caucuses or former Soviet region. The brothers who carried out the Boston Marathon attacks, the car ramming thing in New York a few weeks ago...I think from Uzbekistan and here on visa lottery...etc...
Yes and no. It does clarify though that Putin is accountable to a complex population, and not everyone there would be on board with any closer ties being forged between them and us right now.
So it’s not just American Russia-skeptics weary of joining forces. I personally think cooperation with Russia is possible...in the future though, and not with Putin at the helm.
These Bezos Blog weenies think that wringing their hands over it will make some sort of difference.
Nah. :)
Do we care?
Somewhat-ish, I guess.
It’s certainly not on my list of concerns when I get up to go to work in the mornings.
What is going on with Russia? Don’t they have room in the gulags for 20million?
Putin should gather those 20 million in one area and give it to them.
What people don't consider isn't what percentage of the population in Russia is Muzzie or what that percentage amounts to in absolute numbers. It's how many of the Muzzies in Russia could easily be persuaded to migrate to the EU with the old carrot and stick approach.
The US and EU poking the bear and/or the dragon isn't wise, it's an indication that the people in charge are incapable of dealing with reality rather than continuing to pretend it's 1950 and base their decisions on that false view of reality.
Egypt was the turning point that shows the Neocon fantasy of global hegemony is dead and Afghanistan is the tombstone. The "brilliant" minds tinkering with US foreign policy for the past forty years don't understand that they're not holding all the asymmetric cards in the "asymmetric warfare" game but if they poke and push a bit too much they'll soon find out and the result they'll be dealing with will make the current "terror threat" seem like a schoolyard tiff amongst the kiddies.
Muslims seeth. Thats what they do. Big deal. It’s not like they were all happy and Putin queered their joy.
First day of school 2017 flashback:
“A school in Moscows Meshchansky District is reportedly planning to postpone its September 1 start-of-term parade, because the school is located near the Moscow Cathedral Mosque, the citys largest house of worship for Muslims. This year, the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha falls on September 1, and tens of thousands of worshippers will fill the streets outside the mosque.”
Trivia. In no way alters the facts I stated or the overarching fact that it's easy for Russia to shed half the Muzzies in the country if they put their mind to it and they'll be happy as they flow through our "good ally" Turkey right on to Western Europe.
How about a link to something about a Muslim trans-gender florist or some other irrelevant tidbit you can pull out of your dark, damp, storage bin?
Oh, and the incident you link to is absolute proof that the trash spew about Russia once more becoming a Police State is total, pure, BS.
The demographic crisis precludes any of what you just said. Russia needs to make up for the labor shortfall. Hence why they allow migrants from Central Asia and elsewhere to enter VISA free. End of discussion.

You must get tired of cutting and pasting from the Madam Hillary's Anti-Russia Meme Notebook you work from so pretend to type more BS while you listen to these I know you'll love.
There, now I know you feel better so you can charge back to the BS boiler room and keep on BSin'
