I didn’t get a real chance until my 40’s but some real estate might save my ass.
If I can get one property paid in 7 years, I’m OK. 16% going into the 401.
That’s my advice, is buy some rental properties and set yourself up to live on the income from the rents. Start accumulating properties early, add a new one every few years, so when you retire you have around 10 properties, averaging about $1000 a month free-and-clear each.
I’d rather empty wastebaskets at night in office buildings. I’m a nightowl, nobody around to aggravate me and no stress. :-)

My husband read an article which discussed a survey of middle aged Americans: nearly 70% said their main retirement “financial” plan was “family taking care of them.” I hope that works out for them.
We have one child, our daughter, 30 years old, single mom, one grandchild. We have gone out of our way to save a lot of money for retirement , have long-term/nursing home insurance, and we have no debt of any kind. It would be very unfair of us to expect our daughter to take care of us in our old age.
Union, yes, but Nope, simply a Tier I supplier where the non skilled production workers who I mentioned above made a max of $19.00 per hour.
Having obviously never worked in auto manufacturing, you are both clueless and ignorant.........
The lower the tier, the lower the wages and benefits......And in every aspect, the working conditions in those plants don't even come close to the sterilized conditions of an Amazon warehouse......

You sound like the sort of person who prepared well for their golden years. Many don't, and are forced to seek progressively lower paying, more demeaning work, as they age.
It's just a fact. Older people are routinely discriminated against in the workplace.
I would get an EA and do tax returns,

How about people who trusted what were suppose to be reputable financial advisers only to find out those advisers for most duty was not to you their clients, but to the firm and their own year end bonus.
Or they could get another job.
There is always a better way than paying what amounts to 40% interest to get money. You can bag groceries while you look for a job. Deliver pizzas. Borrow money at a decent interest rate.
People raid their 401k’s because “The money is just sitting there”. I have never met a single person who raided their 401K who didn’t have an alternative. Every one of them was shocked when they found they had to pay that 10% penalty at tax time, despite the fact that people told them.
These people raided their 401k’s but somehow found the money to get an RV. Imagine that!
Get a credit card at 26% interest. It is still cheaper than raiding your 401k.
One of my friends worked in Leavenworth for years. Now he does prison ministry. It’s a completely different scene for him.
I roomed with a former prisoner(murder) at a retreat. It was amazing how they adapt to circumstances. He stashed food everywhere in the room. They found a knife under his mattress when they made the bed.
