Is This New Movie The One That Will Scare The Living #@!/*#^! Out Of You This Year?

(NATIONAL) -- You say you like scary movies? Then grab your pants and get ready to dance because this one just might give you a heart attack and hardening of the arteries at the same time.

There’s a scary new horror flick on the horizon and it’s generating huge buzz off its debut at a film festival.

The British newspaper The Independent says it’s, “unanimously touted as the scariest (movie) in years following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.”

It’s called Hereditary and it’s a new entry from the same folks (distribution company called A24) that brought you ‘The Witch’, the ‘Green Room’ and Greta Gerwig's Oscar-nominated ‘Lady Bird.’

The film is directed by Ari Aster and stars Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne and ‘The Handmaid's Tale’ star Ann Dowd as family members who have a secret but they don’t know that until there is a death in the family.

Here’s the story line: When Ellen, the matriarch of the Graham family, kicks the bucket her daughter’s family starts to unravel some weird facts about their ancestry. The more they find out, the more they find themselves trying to come to grips with what they have all inherited. And it ain't pretty.

USA Today says, “If you'd ever like to sleep again, then you should probably steer clear of A24's latest horror offering. Hereditary, which flew in under the radar on the Sundance Film Festival lineup, is the paralyzing feature-film debut of shorts director Ari Aster, who wrote the script four years ago amid unspecified family turmoil. “

Over at the Verge.com they say, "Hereditary picked up a reputation early on at Sundance 2018 as an exceptionally scary horror film, and it’s a particularly terrific experience in a packed theater. Aster’s story about a haunted family and a mysterious legacy is packed with jump-scares, but it also builds up the kind of slow-burn, nearly unbearable tension that can leave an entire theater holding their collective breath.”

The bible of show business Variety says, “It’s a freaky trance-out of a supernatural thriller, all about a family that’s being torn apart by ghosts, and it’s full of things that would look right at home in the megaplex horror-film-of-the-week…taken on its own terms…”Hereditary” may be the most exciting movie I’ve seen at Sundance this year…what viewers will discover is that the movie, unlike almost every mainstream horror film you see these days, has the substance to match its scares. It gets at something sophisticated: the way that mental and emotional damage becomes part of a family’s spirit, and is therefore passed on as if it were…a spirit. “

Hot dang, hop nail if anything that bad boy’s gonna sail!

No word on a release date but you can put solid money there's gonna be looooong long lines waitin’ to get in into the movie house when it arrives in your town

And remember kids, you read it here first.

My scary film ordeal was when my father and Admiral Byrd took my to see the 1953 release of “War of the Worlds”. I was 7.

The Exorcist is my gold standard for scary movies. Having worked in an urban hospital emergency department I am convinced that every one of them needs an exorcist on staff.

I’ve never seen The Exorcist all the way through because whether it was broadcast, cable or satellite TV, something always “went wrong” and I lost the signal.

It’s like something doesn’t want me to watch it.

I don’t even bother trying anymore.

I wonder if this movie will be as scary as The Sixth Sense or Muriel’s Wedding

The Exorcist is my gold standard for scary movies.

And it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it.

I won’t see or read any Exorcist-like stories as I believe real evil spirits can take advantage of an opening created by fictional ones.

May I suggest that if you can be spiritually "invaded" because of a movie, you may want to seek guidance regarding your faith and spine issues. My guess is you burned your ac/dc records because they were leading you astray.

The Ring scared the cr#p out of me! It's the best kind of creepy film, where the horror isn't based on shock and gore. As masterful as it was, I never ever want to see it again. :-)

She seldom looks the same in each role she plays. She’s liked here as well.

BTW, Sundance festival overall - it was just posted that the party was a big 0 (larger than BO’Bs) Few good movies, but the article did mention this one as “Good”. Hopefully better than ‘The Blair Witch Project’ (assuming this to be an Indie as well)

Same in my house. I do not let evil into my home via some movie. I had an older sister staying at my house recently for a few months. I came inside one afternoon and she had some demon possession/paranormal movie on. I told her my rule and she said okay and turned the channel. About 30 minutes later she flipped it back to that show. I walked into the family room where she was at, picked up the remote and shut the TV off, then walked out with it in my hand.

Sixth Sense was a very good movie, but scary???

The original “King Kong”, Fay Wray flick, was the first ever seen when my parents took me to the theater. Must have been a re-release in the 1950s cause in the 1930s I was no more than a spark in my daddy’s eye.

That’s how we felt when I agreed to let my 69 sister stay with us over the winter. I finally had enough and showed her the door the week after new years! Talk about a living nightmare!

I was out of town and caught “The Ring” on TV part-way through. I had never heard of it, and no idea what it was about, especially jumping in part-way. It REALLY held my attention and made me think.

For sudden jolts of fright, I like An American Werewolf in London (1981) .
