The manufacturer tells you that there must be a licensed driver in the driver’s seat who must be ready to take over at any time. That is insane. If the driver has to be sufficiently attentive to take over EFFECTIVELY at any time, he might as well have his hands on the wheel and his foot on a pedal and be driving. To heck with the robot.

Yes I agree. The idea is very seductive but in the end it would be huge loss of freedom and destroy a big piece of our culture. Think of all that revolves around your car. First date, pride of your first car on it goes. Plus every move you make would be recorded somewhere.

You mentioned one of the key target markets. Taxis, semis, mail. And of course people with long commutes. The elderly, the infirmed. And the lazy, let’s never leave out the lazy, the target market for almost everything.

I agree. I could NEVER let a car on autopilot drive me through LA traffic on the 405. It takes a real goof-ball to do something like that.
