A NASA astronaut who was slated to become the first African American to serve as a member of the crew aboard the International Space Station has been removed from her upcoming mission.
Jeanette Epps, who had been scheduled to launch to the space station in June of this year for a five-month expedition, has been replaced on the flight by another NASA astronaut, Serena Auñón-Chancellor, who was serving as Epps' backup.
NASA announced the crew change on Jan. 18, stating that Epps will assume duties in the Astronaut Office at Johnson Space Center in Houston, and "be considered for assignment to future missions."
The reason for Epps' removal was not given. Brandi Dean, a NASA spokesperson, said that a number of factors were considered. More From Space.com
Jeanette Epps
"These decisions are personnel matters for which NASA doesn't provide information," Dean told collectSPACE.com.
Six African-American astronauts Robert Curbeam, Alvin Drew, Joan Higginbotham, Leland Melvin, Robert Satcher and Stephanie Wilson previously visited the station on space shuttle missions to assemble and supply the orbiting laboratory, but Epps would have been the first to serve on the space station's resident crew.

Maybe the commander wouldn’t allow her favorite food on board, or it wasn’t certifiable in time, and she went all Waffle House on the culinary people.
Whatever the reason for her reassignment, you can take it to the bank that it was unquestionably justified. And you can also bank that, if it could in any way be construed as bad acts on her part, the reason(s) will be treated as Top Secret SCI with no one but the decision makers having a need to know.
What does race have to do with his getting bumped???
All you have to do is sneeze and they’ll bump you, can’t take a risk of flu taking every crew member in the station to the mat flat on their back.
Why does this article keep popping up on freepers? It’s a nothingburger article. NASA scrubs astronauts at times. Astronauts are in and out of flight status based on their fitness to perform mission requirments. NASA does not look forward to changes in personnel and try to avoid it because the training involved and crew cohesion but there is always a backup or perhaps and alternative package that can be applied to any mission.
It is really stretch to apply absurd rationale without substantiated fact, and NASA is not giving put personnel data for public desemination.
Ok...didn’t realize she was that old....maybe change of life problems then...
I just know that the ACLU, NAACP, BLM and SPLC are going to scream.
thanks. the launch isn’t until June ?
The headline was written deliberately so as to incite ignorant people to cry “racism!”
Yep.
Did she take a knee?
“Why does this article keep popping up on freepers? Its a nothingburger article.”

That’s what General/Chat is for.
You don’t have to read it.
.
She must not be very good at what she was supposed to do
Shut it down with the rest of the nonessential items.
NASA still wasting tax dollars on useless "missions" is just as bad as the government running Amtrak and the postal service.
This is the new age of Blue Origin and SpaceX.
Privatize it all. Auction off the assets to the private launch companies and universities, and let real demand operate.
.
Why is anyone even keeping track of things like this? The left’s obsession with race has no end.
Geeze, does the reason always have to do with a womans reproductive organs? Maybe, she just changed her mind, or it caused to much stress on her family.
I do and I find your comment to be very callous and unsympathetic to an individual who obviously dedicated her entire life for such an appointment.
I also suspect you are way off base.
Ever think that maybe, just maybe, she developed a medical condition that would disqualify her from this mission?
It wouldn't be the first time a mission member was removed due to a medical condition discovered at the last minute............Deke Slayton was selected to pilot the second U.S. manned orbital spaceflight, but was grounded in 1962 by atrial fibrillation. Fortunately for him, in March of 1972, he was granted medical clearance to fly, and was assigned as the docking module pilot of the 1975 ApolloSoyuz Test Project, at age 51 becoming the oldest person to fly in space at the time.
While I won't consider you a racist or call you out for being one, I'm curious why you seem to take some pleasure in the fact that this highly educated and dedicated black woman would get bumped from this upcoming space mission.......
Or, IMHO, she got pregnant.
If it was personality based the “diversity” points she has would keep her in place.
She is pregnant, therefore, NASA says she can return to other flights in future.
