Consumer Reports rates 26 veggie, cheese pizzas for taste, nutrition
Your family might have a favorite frozen pizza that you eat as-is or even add some toppings to, but maybe theres a pizza in the store thats even healthier and tastier than your go-to. Consumer Reports food experts evaluated 26 different frozen vegetable and cheese pies for taste, nutrition and price.
"We consider the nutrition profile and also evaluate for taste. Ideally, a store-bought frozen pizza should taste like it was just put together with fresh ingredients. And its a high bar, but Consumer Reports found some pies that came close," said Amy Keating, with Consumer Reports.

California Pizza Kitchen Spinach and Artichoke Crispy Thin Crust Pizza has chunky artichokes in a white cream sauce. It packs a garlicky punch and has less fat and sodium than most of the pizzas tested. Trader Joes Organic Roasted Vegetable Pizza has a variety of chunky veggies, such as peppers, zucchini and eggplant, and it has five grams of fiber per serving. And Dr. Oetker Virtuoso Thin and Crispy Crust Pizza Vegetable Medley has fresh-tasting cherry tomatoes, peppers and red onion. Pepperoncini peppers add a little tang.
The top-ranked cheese pizzas earned good marks overall. American Flatbread Tomato Sauce and Three Cheese Pizza has an interesting blend of flavorful cheese on a thin, whole grain style crust. Amys Cheese Pizza is a combination of tender, yeasty crust topped with mozzarella and a fresh tasting tomato sauce.
The American Flatbread costs about $4 a slice and Amy's Cheese Pizza is about $2.67 a slice.
DiGiorno Original also rates good and costs $1.17 a slice.
I’ve tried every one that’s been rated as being among the best. The best of those are edible only in emergencies. But I readily admit to being a pizza snob.
We like Digiorno best, too.

I found that I got better results across the board by preheating my electric oven for 20 minute and then baking at a far hotter temperature than they recommend (typically 325-400), I use 500 degrees.
From the freezer to the oven. The crust is crisp (I don’t put it right on the rack), the sauce is moist, and the cheese is melted, not burned.
Time to cook varies by maker.
Don’t pay no mind to the pizza elitists.
While I really enjoy a fresh pizza. Every so often I can still appreciate those cheap frozen pizzas my daughter and her friends bring home.
I always see that brand but have never purchased it.
There are any number that when doctored up will make a turd.
NONE of them are worth a damn the next day
“its the crust stupid”
A quick anecdote. I remember being in a car with my father when I was 13 (1974). We passed a pizza place and Dad said, “I think pizza is a fad food on it’s way out. Everybody’s tried it and they’ll all go back to stick to the ribs food.”
If food has spice in it more exotic than black pepper Dad hated it.
DiGiorno’s Self Rising Crust, Supreme Pizza. Extras: Mozzarella, Parmesan cheeses, hot country style sausage, chopped bell pepper
Dinner is served.
Pizza Hut or Pizza Inn? Always preferred Pizza Inn back in the day. Pizza Hut seemed a bit inferior.
Make a Chef Boy Ardee box pizza! Extra pepperoni or cheese if you want. Best sauce ever. Very retro and a great American story.
“Home Run” thin crust. Cook in the oven rack works fine, but fancy pans and stones are OK also. Better than many restaurant pizza’s, not expensive.
I found one of those “Screamin Sicilian” Pizzas in a clearance bin at the Walmart Super Center. It was $3.00 so I decided to give it a try.
It was the best frozen pizza I have tried but still not great. The next time I was in the store they were all gone.
I use 425, but I preheat the pizza pan as well as the oven. That way the crust starts cooking from the bottom right away, while the cheese is cooking from the top.
I’ve tried a few homemade pizza recipes, but have yet to find a good sauce. Most of them call for store-bought pizza sauce, I’d rather make one from scratch. The from-scratch recipes I’ve tried ranged from “blah” to awful.
“Bessie’s Revenge” is the best one, I think.
Although not a frozen pizza, Papa Murphy’s, is a cold, take and bake pizza that’s better than most pizza chains including Dominos and Pizza hut.
Even the disgusting but yummy barbecued chicken flavor?
