Otzi the iceman really was killed by an ARROW: Europe's oldest mummy (tr)

A scientist has finally confirmed with 3D models that legendary ice man Otzi was indeed killed 5,300 years ago by an arrow.

Otzi, a 5,300-year-old mummified man, was found in 1991 in a glacier in the Alps between what is now Austria and Italy.

Since the discovery, Otzi has been examined by multiple teams of scientists, with new discoveries coming to light each time.

Now an expert claims it was the arrow that delivered the fatal blow, severing the nerve to his shoulder and hitting his major vessels.

Since his discovery on 19 December 1991 by German hikers, Ӧtzi has provided window into early human history.

His mummified remains were uncovered in melting glacier in the mountainous border between Austria and Italy.

Thomas Bonfert, who is also an image editor and film director for Austrian public broadcaster ORF, investigated the world's most famous mummified body for his doctoral thesis.

Dr Bonfert was mostly interested in finding undisputed proof that Otzi died from an arrow injury.

Dr Bonfert said: 'For me, because of my theoretical background being on one hand a radiology technologist and on the other hand anthropologist, it was interesting to pick up this topic and to show whether this hypothesis is plausible or not using image-editing work.'

It quickly became clear for the scientist that Otzi was indeed shot in the pit in which he was later found.

“...that Otzi was indeed shot in the pit in which he was later found.”

I seem to recall they found some of his artifacts neatly laid out nearby? I guess the guys were polite enough to let him do that while he dug his own grave.

More liking perhaps he fell into an animal pit and was on someone else’s happy hunting grounds.

I recall hearing that Otzi is of the very same ethnic stock as the present-day residents of the Alps.

It's amazing to think that with all the movement of peoples over millennia, there's a stable population of hardy Alpine folks living where they have been for over 5000 years.

Otzi The Iceman And Sardinians

"The guts of this paper will not be particularly surprising to close readers of this weblog. The guesses of some readers based on what the researchers hinted were correct: Ötzi seems to resemble mostly closely the people of Sardinia. This is rather interesting. One reason is prosaic. The HGDP sample used in the paper has many Northern Italians (from Bergamo). Why is it that Ötzi does not resemble the people from the region that he was indigenous to? (we know that he was indigenous because of the ratio of isotopes in his body) A more abstruse issue is that it is interesting that Sardinians have remained moored to their genetic past, enough so that a 5,300 year old individual clearly can exhibit affinities with them."

“””...severing the nerve to his shoulder and hitting his major vessels.”””

Doesn’t say anything about a knee.

Curious. If he was shot in the pit where he was found, I would have expected the body to have been looted. The copper ax especially would have been valuable. Even his friends would have taken that, and his enemies certainly would have.

Might have been a murder victim from someone from his own tribe. Turning up at home saying ‘poor otzi, he got lost in a storm. I did everything i could to find him but no luck’ whilst also having otzis valuables would look a bit fishy.
