Life Time has scrubbed all-news cable channels from the screens at its fitness centers, saying a growing number of customers think they dont fit a healthy lifestyle.
The Chanhassen-based company this week dropped CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and CNBC from TVs in front of various workout machines.
While the screens were in view of all in fitness areas, audio could only be heard through earphones.
With a few exceptions, TV screens built into treadmills and other cardio machines also currently do not have the ability to display these channels, Life Time spokeswoman Natalie Bushaw said Thursday. However, a second phase in this viewing shift, to be completed by the end of February, will have all stations available, Bushaw added.
USA, A&E, Discovery, HGTV, the local over-the-air stations and ESPN are all that remain on the visual menu of distractions while sweating off the caloric consequences of the holidays.
Bushaw added, Clubs do have flexibility to air programs of interest in their club, such as local sporting events from college to pro teams.

“...a growing number of customers think they dont fit a healthy lifestyle.”
Actually, I think that is a great idea...
"...no news broadcast on workout equipment..."
but watching Brian Stelter while hitting the heavy bag might burn off a little extra steam
Probably got tired of people asking to change FROM CNN. I do so anywhere I go and have gotten back comments say that lots of people do ‘but corporate says keep it on CNN.’ Not worth a boycott, but one place they should go is our public airports.
Makes perfect sense now that Clinton Crime Family is under investigation on 2 fronts.
In other news CNBC: “The Business Channel” did an in depth piece on the new
Kitty Kelly book but they forgot the part where the author said he made it all up.
How he turned a million dollar seed money into multiple billions with buildings and golf clubs to show for it must be a mystery to the people who think he is stupid.
They also will need to ban ESPNcnn 1 & 2!
At the gym I work out, I always tune the TV sets nearest to me away from news channels if they are on. And I have heard almost no complaints about doing that either.
I find I leave my home TV on for background and usually have the channel set to HSN or QVC or FoxSportsSouthwest.
I have not tuned in any of the cable news channels since election night, 2016.
Speaking of which, what was Hannity’s big Tick Tock he promised would happen on January 2? Maybe he meant TicTac and listeners heard him wrong. [I haven’t listened to him since election night 2006.]
i think this is mostly a good thing
too much news is distressing and that must cause health problems
and
too much of the news today is fake news, anyway.. and that must cause mental problems
Smart. Hope Planet Fitness follows suit.
24 Hour Fitness Centers around town have mainly CNN. Some have Fox and CNN. Occasionally I will listen if I have headphones with me, and something of interest is on.
What a great idea. I haven’t watched any of that fake news hardly at all for ten years or more. Only if something is really happening ie earthquakes big storms etc. All those networks show is just a tiny fraction of what is really going on in the world. Then they never follow up on what happens later pertaining to the same story. I also despise TVs on at all in restaurants etc.....
PS I think it is basically a good idea to do this. News saturation, I can’t imagine, is good for the noggin’.
I do too.......No need to watch political commentary on a channel you may disagree with since there's other choices such as the golf channel..........
I enjoy life much more when I turn off TV news. I still read the news but somehow it grates less in print.
I think this is a great idea actually.
Very good news. Most of it is propaganda, delivered in a breathless manner. Not at all relaxing or healthful. Hopefully more public spaces will ban so-called news channels.
