If you're between 55 and 75 years old, you may want to try playing 3D platform games like Super Mario 64 to stave off mild cognitive impairment and perhaps even prevent Alzheimer's disease.
According to the MRI test results, only the participants in the video-game cohort saw increases in gray matter volume in the hippocampus and cerebellum. Their short-term memory also improved.
The tests also revealed gray matter increases in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and cerebellum of the participants who took piano lessons, whereas some degree of atrophy was noted in all three areas of the brain among those in the passive control group.

I have an old friend who is president of Mensa for a fairly large area. He loves chess. He has tried to get me to take the Mensa test but I just don’t care anything about it.
I will say that when we were both young I scored about the same thing he did on achievement tests in school and we both scored in the top percentile.
Anyway I have tried him in chess a few times and he absolutely kills me without really trying. On the other hand, I can beat him in checkers.
Tetris!!
Yeah, I know the feeling. I taught a few friends chess years ago, and after a half dozen games or so, they would start beating me eight out of 10 games. My army buddy beat me effortlessly 998 out of a thousand games.
And I only beat my father twice, until his brain started to fail.
And I know for sure that I’m much smarter overall than any of them.
I don’t know if I could beat them at checkers, ...
but I’m pretty sure I could beat them with a stick. ;-)
Around 1984 I bought a hand held “space invaders” at Best Products. It was on clearance and I think maybe a quarter of original price. It too 2 C batteries and they lasted a long time.
I got really hooked on it and found myself playing it long enough to start seeing things and then I would quit. It was around 12 inches by 10 inches and maybe and inch and 3/4 thick. The buttons were well placed and it was easy to use.
Around 25 years ago I found it in storage and gave it to my Daughter. She in turn stored it until recently when her Son found it, added batteries and started playing it.
She told me he got so hooked on it that she had to make him
quit. He is 13.
I got my 70-year-old dad hooked on Battlefield One. My mom may disown me.
Blueberries are brain food.
Been playing Elder Scrolls 4, Oblivion on my XBox. Kind of fun but had to have my teen daughter help me on a level. lol
I’m going to play Skyrim when I finish.
When I was 32, my five year old daughter beat The Sponge Bob game. I couldn't pass certain levels but she was able to complete levels I was struggling with. lol.
Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age Remastered for PS4
Call of Duty WWII and World of Tanks.
During the season I eat blueberries by the lug...almost. Cannot get enough of them.
I had been playing Wordstein, but I am cheap and do not want to buy clues. With an aunt just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a father with Parkinson’s and another aunt who had been heading toward some sort of dementia, guess I had better get my brain in shape. (All are/were siblings) Sewing is supposed to help with brain function, too.
nope. I’ve read articles that reported that games like that do not truly help the brain so much as doing actual tasks and projects.
I think most video games are one of the ways of getting people so summed down and easier to control.
I’m Guild Wars 2...
I’m into Star Citizen, though its still only in Alpha.
If you liked Skyrim, try Witcher 3. Combat is a little more difficult but it’s been really fun. Wait till you meet the archgriffon. Good times.... /s
I’ve had an XBOX for over ten years. Two years ago I got an XBOX 360. I played the original Wolfenstien. Great game. Didn’t like the new one. I’ve got a lot of the call Of Duty games. Excellent stuff. I understand there a new Modern Warfare out. Got to check it out. Game on!
Keep playing, you’ll get better. I’m 61 and I can pretty much hold my own with my 14 year old grandson but he does beat me bad sometimes. The kids are just quicker.
